Preparation of standards for PLM systems

July 31, 2024 it became known that Ministry of Industry and Trade Rosstandart they formed a program of standardization of Russian systems of industrial products life cycle management (). PLM It is assumed that this will help stimulate the development of the relevant market.

According to the Kommersant newspaper, the program is designed for the period from 2024 to 2026. In order to digitally transform mechanical engineering, it is planned to create a "fund of interconnected standardization documents for use by industrial organizations in ensuring the life cycle of civil and dual-use machine-building products." Rosstandart will have to describe the technology for supporting the life cycle of products, establish requirements for their compatibility, regulate the formats of documents and their application at different stages of product use.

In addition, the project will develop national standards, including the new GOST "Product Life Cycle Support System." It is planned to finalize related unified systems of design, technological and program documentation (ESKD, ESTD and EPDS). In general, standardization will help ensure the compatibility of new and existing engineering software.

Vitaly Pleshanov, Director for Project Management and Digitalization of TMH JSC (Transmashholding), notes that many standards in force in mid-2024 "have not been updated since 2020 and still take into account the outdated product development paradigm, when the original design documentation is a drawing that should be archived on paper." At the same time, according to Pleshanov, the industry needs "a single set of standards describing the entire life cycle of a product made in electronic form." Deputy Chairman of the RSPP Committee on Industrial Policy and Technical Regulation Andrei Lotsmanov adds that the standards for digitalization of industry need to be updated taking into account technologies such as digital modeling and the Internet of Things.[1]

The volume of the Russian market for BIM and PLM systems is estimated at 100 billion rubles

At the end of 2022, the volume of the Russian market for product lifecycle management (PLM) systems, as well as information modeling tools for buildings and structures (BIM) amounted to approximately 100 billion rubles. Moreover, against the background of the current geopolitical situation, interest in domestic products has significantly increased. This is stated in the materials of JSC "SiSoft Development" (CSoft Development), published in early May 2024. Read more here.

2022: The share of Russian PLM systems increased from 33% to 69%

In 2021, the share of Russian PLM-solutions systems (for life cycle management) in the Russian market was 33%, and after an ode it grew to about 69%. This is evidenced by the materials prepared for the strategic session of the Russian government on the digitalization of industry, which took place in November 2023.

As Rossiyskaya Gazeta writes with reference to these documents, in 2021 about 67% of the Russian software market for controlling the life cycle of products (used mainly in industrial enterprises, including strategic ones) belonged to Siemens PLM, Autodesk, Dassault Systemes, Synopsis and other foreign companies. The share of the largest Russian manufacturer of such solutions, ASCON, was measured at 13%. It is noted that in 2022, after the departure of foreign vendors, the volume of the Russian PLM systems market decreased to 16 billion rubles, of which domestic companies accounted for 11.1 billion rubles of revenue (about 69%).

2023 was the first year in which not a single contract with a foreign vendor was concluded on the PLM system market, but the market not only did not fall, but also the head of the Ministry of Digital Science Maksut Shadayev began to grow significantly.

This is a super example, when we had 1/3 of the market, we sank by a third, but more than half of it was won back by Russian companies, and their revenue doubled. Thanks to the active support of the government and stimulating customers, - said the Minister of Digital Development, Communications and Mass Media of the Russian Federation.

The Ministry of Digital Development expects that the volume of the PLM systems market in Russia by the end of 2023 will reach 18.6 billion rubles, including 14.8 billion - the organic revenue of Russian software developers. The ministry has even larger forecasts for 2024: the total market volume should be about 23.6 billion rubles, including organic revenue - 18.7 billion rubles.

According to the Ministry of Digital Development, in 2022, 13 projects were supported to switch to the use of Russian PLM-solutions systems, and the volume of grants in this area amounted to more than 13 billion rubles.

The money has been brought to customers, work is underway, and most of these projects will be completed in 2025. Their implementation will allow Russian companies to finalize their solutions to the level of international analogues and scale their implementation, including in such industries as automotive, aircraft and shipbuilding, heavy and general mechanical engineering, the department noted (quoted by Kommersant).

As a source in the software market told Rossiyskaya Gazeta, the Russian market for PLM systems is growing many times, largely due to comparison with the low base of previous years.

Normal Russian PLM previously did not exist de facto. The thing is that PLM systems require a very deep level of expertise, and accordingly, in order to write such a system from scratch, colossal investments are needed, the source said.[2]

A number of large companies, including KamAZ, Metrovagonmash, Transmashholding, Norilsk Nickel, Uralchem and Rosatom, implement or plan projects in the field of PLM at the expense of their own or borrowed funds. So, in 2022, Rosatom announced a middle-class PLM system SARUS.PLM. This is the only PLM system in Russia that can run on the domestic operating system Astra Linux. Its important advantage is the use of the Russian database management system. The PLM system can be used both by commercial companies and (in a protected version) by defense industry enterprises.

2012

The Russian PLM market is overtaking the global growth rate. Thus, according to the analyst company IDC, in 2012 the volume of engineering software sales increased by 20.2% and reached $204.6 million, thereby exceeding last year's analyst forecast. By engineering software, analytics from IDC means MCAD, process control (CAM), engineering analysis (CAE) systems, as well as collective product data management (cPDM) tools and some other tools. The main growth factors were investments in the construction industry and industrial production. In addition, the need for automation and optimization of space and infrastructure management has had a positive impact on the market.
