Content

On June 10, 2014 the Softline company announced project completion of upgrade of engineering infrastructure of DPC of Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology.

Project Tasks

Data processing center of MIPT - a core of information systems of institute. The computing powers collected in data center are used as systems intended for the physical modeling and calculations connected with scientific and educational activity, and office applications: mail and communications, management of IT infrastructure, accounting, etc.

Earlier many faculties and MIPT departments located own servers, each of which was supported by forces of local specialists. It threatened reliability and fault tolerance of operation of the equipment, "blurred" responsibility for result, was economically inefficient.

The management of institute made the decision on consolidation of computing powers of separate faculties and departments in uniform DPC for the purpose of providing requirements of reliability, availability, security and controllability of IT structure and reduction in cost of ownership.

The operating data center in terms of engineering infrastructure could not provide reliable functioning of the equipment which was going to be placed in it. MIPT made the decision on upgrade of DPC for its reduction in compliance to modern requirements in terms of power, reliability and fault tolerance and also for a possibility of installation of more power-intensive IT equipment.

Priority for MIPT - quality of project implementation and reliable reputation of the contractor. Technical solution of Softline is recognized the best according to the results of the tender and Softline acted as the general contractor of the project.

Project Progress

At upgrade of data center of MIPT the latest developments in the field of power supply, conditioning and communication technologies were used. During the project subsystems were upgraded:

  • distributions of power supply and regular power supply;
  • conditioning;
  • structured cabling system;
  • automated system of supervisory control.

Project Results

The created engineering infrastructure of DPC is constructed based on modular components (interline conditioners, chillers, the UPS, a cable system, automatic equipment controllers). Such principle allows to provide current demands of the customer and does not require use of the excess expensive equipment. The new architecture of data center of MIPT is characterized by unique reliability, high energy efficiency and an easy scaling option.

IT specialists of MIPT filled data center with server, communication, other hardware and started in the mode of production operation. Work in actual practice showed - the DPC conforms to requirements in terms of power, reliability and fault tolerance.

Yury Shkandybin, the chief of DPC of MIPT, told: "Creation of engineering infrastructure of data center – the difficult task requiring harmonious work of specialists of several engineering areas. I consider that we were not mistaken, having entrusted this responsible project of Softline company. The institute was provided with the modern DPC which ensured functioning of the computing powers which are available for MIPT and locating a stock for their building. Acceptance tests showed compliance of the engineering equipment to our requirements, and the agreement on five years' service guarantees us long operability of data center".
