Withdrawal from Russia due to US sanctions imposed after the outbreak of the conflict in Ukraine
The reason for the shutdown of production on Sakhalin-1 was the refusal of the operator of the project of the American Exxon Mobil to ship oil to the Sovcomflot tankers, after as a result of US sanctions they lost coverage from Western insurers. Sovcomflot attracted a Russian insurer, but Exxon was not satisfied with this, although shipments from the Sakhalin-2 project continued in a completely similar situation. As a result, in October 2022, the Russian authorities suspended Exxon.
Exxon left Russia after the creation of the new operator Sakhalin-1.
