XO_Fonts fonts

In December, 2016 New cloud technologies placed in open access of the headset of fonts own developments. Font set carries the name XO_Fonts and is created as an alternative to commercial fonts. It can replace widespread fonts of Microsoft and Monotype on any platform, speak in the company.

Set includes ten standard fonts and twenty four outlines. It is possible to download body types on a developer's site (fonts.myoffice.ru). At the time of the announcement New cloud technologies spread nine fonts in a public access. The tenth font and probably even more new fonts will appear at the beginning of the next year, approximately in February, told TAdviser in the company.

The first fonts of New cloud technologies which became public

The XO_Fonts fonts allow to display without distortions and violation of structure any documents created using the most popular fonts declare in New cloud technologies. Metric characteristics of the document (quantity of lines, arrangement of tables and headings) at the same time will not change. XO_Fonts are compatible to operating systems Windows macOS Android iOS Tizen Linux. The CEO of New cloud technologies Dmitry Komissarov notes that the company solved an ambitious problem, having achieved identical display of the fonts on any platforms.

Fonts extend on open license model and are available to use by third-party developers free of charge. The license permits to modify, copy and extend the original and modified font, to include and integrate it with any products, including commercial. At the same time according to the license the original and modified fonts and their separate graphic elements cannot in itself extend for a fee.

All fonts developed by the company - Cyrillic. In addition the developer turns on in them characters of the republics of the Russian Federation and the CIS countries and also foreign characters (what as 1252-western or 1254-turkish). The company hopes that opening of fonts will contribute for all comers to the development of flexibility of regulations in use of fonts in Russia and beyond its limits.

Main objective with which fonts were uploaded publicly is import substitution.

Using XO Fonts, we are going to replace the fonts which are most used in the state organizations and the large companies, for example, such as Arial, the Times New Roman, Calibri, Courier New, Tahoma and others, - Komissarov said.

Earlier, in September, 2016, own PT Astra Sans and PT Astra Serif fonts for the purpose of import substitution were provided by Astra Linux OS developer – NPO Rusbitech company. They were created together with NPP ParaType. These fonts are metric analogs of the foreign Times New Roman font, are suitable for use on different platforms and freely extend. In December premises of this development became known: the American company Monotype Imaging which possesses the rights to the Times New Roman refused the agreement about Rusbitech because of sanctions since the company cooperates with the Ministry of Defence.

In May, 2016 the Minister of Communications Nikolai Nikiforov called short-sighted use of the softwares western standards, in particular, of fonts and types of files. Requirements imposed to departmental regulations force officials to use foreign software, he told. Nikiforov noted that government employees type texts the font Times New Roman headset and provide documents in the .doc format that complicates import substitution in the field of IT.

Also the international players have own analogs of popular fonts: for example, Google, Red Hat, Linux Foundation.
