On April 21, 2017 the OSIsoft company announced an implementation project of technologies of expanded analytics and machine learning in Deschutes Brewery.
Project Tasks
Additional process optimization of brewing for decrease in product cost was required for Deschutes Brewery company.
The alternative to hi-tech approach was represented costly: equipment of beer factory additional density meters ~ $750 thousand, hardware upgrade — even more expensive perspective. The brewery decided to use an algorithm of machine learning for processing of operational data.
Use of expanded analytics and machine learning for forecasting of transition of process of fermentation for the following stage became the solution.
Project Progress
The customer company joined [1] for additional optimization of technology of brewing by means of software products PI System, Cortana Intelligence and PI Integrator for Microsoft Azure.
Project Results
Implementation of infrastructure of data of PI System helped to reduce process of fermentation by day and to postpone capital upgrade of production worth $8 million.
Operational data are stored in PI System and prepared for processing in Cortana Intelligence Suite by means of the PI Integrator for Microsoft Azure component. After implementation of PI Integrator for Microsoft Azure technologists of Deschutes Brewery quickly learn about the beginning of the following stage of fermentation, without wasting time (reduction of time reaches till 72 o'clock) and without risking product quality.
Thanks to PI System we became better to understand brewing process in general and more effectively to control it, achieved the necessary flavoring and aromatic characteristics of beer. Participating in Red Carpet Incubation we could implement expanded analytics using the solutions Cortana Intelligence and PI Integrator for Microsoft Azure. Now we precisely know when there is a transition from one stage of technology process to another, revealed possibilities of optimization of production.
