St. Petersburg planetarium

The ambitious project of construction in St. Petersburg of the biggest planetarium in the world in November, 2017 is implemented. The planetarium with a dome with a diameter of 37 meters will open in November on Obvodny Canal Embankment. Earlier in the building of future cultural object the gas-holder of Gas works worked, then Lumiere-hall was located.

In St. Petersburg the planetarium with the biggest dome in the world opened

The star hall of planetarium received on November 4, 2017 the first guests in the historical building of a gas-holder. On diameter of a dome it exceeded planetarium in the Japanese city of Nagoya which was considered as the biggest in the world[1].

The building of the biggest gas-holder of Russia on Obvodny Canal Embankment was built more than one and a half centuries ago for a gas storage which was used for lighting of city streets. The area of all complex after restoration is 4 thousand square meters and allows to integrate the star hall, the museum with space exhibits, interactive halls with virtual reality, educational classes and observatory.

Hundreds of visitors gathered for the opening ceremony of the star hall with the biggest projective dome, and even on an input queue from persons interested accumulated. Guests were welcomed by the speaking robot with whom with pleasure not only children, but also adults communicated and photographed.

Visitors are waited by this space

Diameter of a projective dome of new planetarium is 37 meters that on 2 meters exceeds parameters of planetarium in the Japanese city of Nagoya which is entered to the Guinness Book of Records. The picture to the screen of planetarium will be transferred by 40 powerful projectors, permission of images will make more 256th million pixels, and the power of a surround sound will reach 50 kW. As envisioned by authors of the project, it will allow visitors to plunge completely into the atmosphere of space – especially as for their convenience in the hall instead of traditional seats, padded stools are set.

Investments into the project

Investments into reconstruction of the building under planetarium make about 100 million rubles. Investments are going to be paid back in five years, Vedomosti writes. Investors, in particular, expect up to one million visitors a year. However the CEO of "Infoline-analytics" Mikhail Burmistrov predicts no more than 400 thousand. According to him, at an object not the best transport availability, and it will begin to work in the conditions of the high competition. In St. Petersburg the planetarium already works, and one more will be soon open. However, diameter of a dome at them is significantly less: 16 m[2].

Press demonstration

On May 26, 2017 in "Lumiere-Hall of SPB" press demonstration of the project of new planetarium which will become the world's largest took place. Diameter of a dome of planetarium will be 37 m. The planetarium will be integrated into the ancient building of a gas-holder located in St. Petersburg at the address the embankment of Obvodny Canal 74, litas. C.

The projective system of Planetarium will be based based on 40 projectors of high resolution working "a frame in a frame", they will locate in the center of the hall. NVIDIA provides hardware of servers of planetarium with the latest high-performance graphic NVIDIA Quadro P6000 cards together with Quadro Sync II for video playback with the resolution up to 16K and calculations of the generator of the star sky which will be used for educational and scientific programs of planetarium.

Opening of Planetarium is planned for November 4, 2017.

Key features of the project

  • management system for a dome: an opportunity for visitors to move on the star sky by means of touch screens which will be installed on all hall. After viewing a multimedia content, lasting 40 minutes, touch tables will be alternately activated and visitors will be able to manage the image on a dome of planetarium (three blocks: the generator of the star sky, the map of the earth weeds around the ISS);
  • the educational program of planetarium will pass in several lecture halls at once, including in street. Now dialogue with a number of higher education institutions and the Northwest organization of Federation of astronautics of Russia over the joint educational program is conducted;
  • filling of the show room and space exhibits, interactive stands: the gallery of achievements of domestic rocket production in scale 1:20 a.m., the three-meter Buran-Energiya model with animation using the KUKA robot, a unique information zone will be made of special stands, 2-01.pngsovmeshchayushchy real objects and projected and using conducting ink which will react to touches of visitors.

Near future object the creative space of scientific and technical orientation will be created. The laboratory with workshop of prototyping, lecture halls, the hall for workshop, aviamodel club, a co-working, a workshop, etc. will earn.

  • integration of planetarium into the building of a gas-holder which is architecture monument: no damage will be caused to the ancient building of the largest gas-holder because constructions are designed on special technology and do not adjoin to building walls.
  • external illumination of planetarium: the first large building in St. Petersburg with the dynamic laser illumination similar to a projective show on a building facade;
  • laboratory for startups: a zone of startups, free for visit, which will be placed in the building, neighboring to planetarium, with studio of prototyping;
  • the cultural program of new planetarium will be the most various, she will inherit a part of already available projects Lumiere hall: scientific festivals, opera, symphony concerts, festivals of audiovisual art;

Project Objectives

Creation of a new cultural object of the Northern Capital and center of concentration of tourists from around the world, increase in interest of youth in the exact sciences, conversion of the ancient building to the modern architectural project. The project startup is planned on November 4, 2017.
