Session "IT in Banks" of TAdviser SummIT on November 29, 2017

On November 29, 2017 within the TAdviser SummIT conference which brought together in total more than 400 participants there took place the session "IT in Banks". Reports on it were made by representatives of financial institutions and suppliers of IT solutions. They discussed opportunities which are given to the financial sector by new technologies and also digital calls of the future for the industry.

Speakers of a session touched upon such subjects as a blockchain, artificial intelligence, biometric identification and some other. Speakers estimated the level of digitalization of the Russian banks in the international context and also offered methods of problem solving, the innovation approaches to business facing banks in communication by further development, shared personal experience.

Experience of customers

The chief information officer of UBS Oleg Nagayev told about future calls for the financial industry, and about how his company prepares for these calls. The main activities of UBS - capital management, assets and investment bank. The company has representations in 52 countries and also four innovation laboratories: in London, focused on a blockchain, two laboratories in Zurich which are engaged in artificial intelligence, and one more in Singapore, focused on security.

The speaker dwelt upon technology of a blockchain which extent of use has three stages:

  • limited use of technology when only banks which cut down expenses as expenses on payments, the main difficulty – reorganization of the current business processes in bank leave have access to a blockchain;
  • individuals and corporations get access to a blockchain, the bank industry changes even stronger as such concept as "bank account" - the account on client side is cancelled, and the bank can render consulting services and services on security if the client lost keys;
  • there are assets, algorithms of artificial intelligence, the main difficulty at this stage are used – new specialists will be required.

For today all projects aim to implement the first stage of mastering of a blockchain, Oleg Nagayev noted. Among other the speaker told about the projects of UBS which are in implementation phase based on a blockchain:

  • Batavia is the trade and financial platform for the international transactions within which as it is supposed, instead of a paper document package on delivery of goods so-called "smart contracts" will be used, start in commercial operation is planned for 2018;
  • Car eWallet is the e-wallet for electric vehicles allowing the electric vehicle most to pay recharge in networks of podzaryadochny stations, the parking and some other actions, this project only started.

The head of department of development of banking systems of Nordea bank Evgenia Erofeyeva told about process of transformation of IT which took place for the last 3 – 4 years in bank, about experience of use [[to Agile and that point where today there is an IT of bank.

Long time traditional approach to making changes practiced in Nordea: The IT receives a request from business, analysts develop terms of reference, programmers implement it, testers test. It were those times when the bank was able to afford staff of IT the size in hundred people, the speaker noted. But times changed: for the purpose of acceleration of development of software products in 2015 the bank employed the Agile-coach who began to train in an experimental order personnel, the being engaged front-endom based on Oracle Siebel CRM. And everything is good, noticed Evgeny Erofeyev, but soon the bank sells retail business, focuses on corporate service, and all specialists trained in Agile appear in other banks and on other positions.

Looking back at the past, the speaker noted that it is impossible to accept blindly technology as a versatile tool for the solution of any tasks, and so far as concerns complex architectural problems, terms of reference, testing and so on - much more suitable methodology. At the same time, there was also a positive experience of use of flexible technologies, so in 2016 the bank could leave from so-called "salary slavery" when salary payments to the staff of the corporate clients having cards of other banks became possible.

Now, summarized Evgeny Erofeyev, the number of IT personnel in bank is reduced, the core banking system is transferred to outsourcing of CFT, on all other ICs in bank own examination is saved, but completions of all software products at the same time are performed on the traditional methodology assuming preparation of terms of reference.

The managing director for development of exchange information and technology services of the Moscow Exchange Sergey Shelyagin told about the projects implemented in his organization. In 2017:

  • the trade and clearing ASTS+ system was improved, its performance and fault tolerance grew three times;
  • the policy of distribution to clients of exchange marketing information changed – distribution became simultaneous, the request for its receiving is not required that significantly reduced costs of clients of the exchange;
  • the exchange moved to new DPCDataSpace therefore, in particular, time of installation of equipment on racks was sharply reduced.

From new projects - in December sponsor's access to the stock market is started, admission according to the same scheme to urgent is in the future planned. In conclusion the speaker mentioned the project on creation of a system of indicative quotations for illiquid tools on the forward market which is in a development stage.

The managing director for technology services of the National Settlement Depositary (NSD) Alexander Nam shared reasons how to turn IT department into the earning division. He noted that clients of NSD are in rather difficult situation – the margin falls, regulatory requirements grow, business stagnates. The situation pushed NSD to understanding that clients need to offer relevant service which became an opportunity to cut down expenses on payments in the SWIFT system.

NSD received the status "service bureau" with the highest certification of Premier and can offer the best terms for carrying out payments in this system of the international financial transactions, the speaker emphasized, having listed connection options via the gateway:

  • The gateway and communication lines – on the party of NSD, the interface – on the party of bank;
  • Complete outsourcing.

Alexander Nam noted that already about 60 banks seized a connectivity to SWIFT through NSD.

The head of department of architecture and application integration ATON Vadim Perepelkin shared experience of creation of an integration bus based on the Open source software which, according to the speaker, reached that level of a maturity when it can be applied to industrial solutions. Need for an integration bus arose in the company in connection with the following problems in the IC of the company at the time of start of the project:

  • integration of the IC by the principle "everyone with everyone";
  • different interchange formats data;
  • complexity of implementation of plans for implementation of new products.

Respectively, simplification of an integration layer and flexible architecture were the purposes of implementation. The open code was selected as for economic, and technology reasons – the low cost, high high-speed performance, flexibility, big community of developers. As transport were selected a message exchange system of RABBIT MQ and Apache Kafka, for an integration layer - the service bus Apache ServiceMix. Project implementation gave specific results - for example, remote opening of the account by the client through filling of the request on the website became possible.

Players of the market: trends and solutions

The director of work with the financial sector of ABBYY Olga Morozova noted that the Russian bank segment of economy in 15 years passed a big way from primitive automation of transactions to digitalization of business processes and use of artificial intelligence technologies. Russia in general does not lag behind for today global trends in digitalization, the speaker emphasized, and the bank segment already passes to level 2.0. It means digitization not only external communication with clients - it is level 1.0, but also internal processes, use of artificial intelligence, a blockchain and gradation on cloud platforms.

Having referred to the research Mckensey, Olga Morozova called key benefits of digitalization of bank processes:

  • new opportunities in the development plan for a product portfolio;
  • reduction of cost of business processes for 50 – 60%;
  • growth of profitability of the customer base;
  • improvement of client experience;
  • fall forward and qualities of rendering financial services;
  • decrease in credit risks.

As for artificial intelligence, the greatest benefits, according to the speaker, can acquire banks in the field of the personalized approach to customer service, risk management and counteraction to fraud, further automation of functions bek-and the front office. Based on the ABBYY Compreno platform allowing to work with texts in a natural language, ABBYY offers automation of the following directions already today:

  • activity of exit managers;
  • currency exchange control – since March 1 of next year changes its order, the speaker reminded, the transaction certificate is cancelled, the bank will have to understand independently the nature of the transaction, to analyze the agreement, supporting documents;
  • processing of payment documents;
  • chat-bots;
  • request processing of executive authorities;
  • credit risks, studying of publications in media.

Time of opening of client accounts can be lowered by 50% thanks to artificial intelligence technology, Olga Morozova noted. Except listed, based on the ABBYY Compreno platform it is possible to implement export of payment documents to any direct systems that gives significant economy of money, an opportunity to optimize front office operating time.

Alexander Gorshkov, the development director of Research Center Prosoft, recognized that fraud in general and social engineering, in particular, will develop more actively. In this context creation of the National Biometric Platform (NBP) as single system of biometric these clients of banks which full-scale start is planned in 2018 is very relevant.

The speaker noted that it is important to understand to banks within the project of NBP:

  • if banks deliver the substandard biometric material, then, naturally, identification will be low-quality too, the level of reliability will fall;
  • information in NBP will be transferred in a type of the file – either the photo, or record of a voice which can be false, to it banks should be ready too;
  • a biometric system will always give the answer with a certain probability of reliability.

Alexander Gorshkov emphasized that it is reasonable to banks to install a local biometric system which would allow to transfer quality biometric material on the analysis to NBP and also change of business processes will be required. Separately the speaker stopped on advantages of identification according to the drawing of veins on palms – a beskontaktnost, high accuracy, efficiency, reliability.

The speaker stopped also on solutions of the company, in particular, on the bimodal solution integrated with video biometrics. The solution includes primary identification on the client's person with his search in base of swindlers, and then according to the drawing of veins on a palm. And, if the client puts the right palm – a situation regular, left – the alarm testimonial of the fact that the client came under pressure from the outside then the signal is transmitted to the receiver. It is supposed that it is convenient to use this technology in depositaries without employees of the bank. The solution works as at the Windows platform, and Linux.

The representative of Magenta Technology, the expert in creation of logistics Evgeny Teslenko, told participants of work of section that his company offers IT solutions in the field of logistics for any industry. As for banking sector, among logistic tasks of bank – collection, service of ATM network, delivery of bank cards, exit service, exit collecting. The speaker stopped on problems of exit collecting in more detail and on how perhaps effectively to solve these problems by means of solutions of Magenta Technology company. Following problems:

  • low quality of training of the exit employee with the debtor;
  • the considerable time which is required for the exit employee for a visit to the debtor;
  • need of following of methodology of collecting;
  • planning of loading of employees and their control from the head;
  • processing of the obtained information on results of departure.

The corresponding project was implemented in VTB 24 bank, demanded change of business processes of bank. As a result of its implementation the solution of the listed above problems was found. In a project deliverable in VTB 24 of number of the actual departures grew by 50%, a share of contact departures - for 30%, collecting of arrears increased by 12%.

Evgeny Teslenko also shared with TAdviser opinion on priorities which will characterize demand for IT in Russia in 2018. He considers that all industry and the banking sector in particular, will try to raise a customer loyalty.

For this purpose the companies already change a work format: transfer service out of limits of office, rendering services in the place, comfortable for the client, - houses, at work where the client is time at present. It became possible thanks to technologies which allow to plan activity of employees during the day taking into account their current load, location of the client, a road situation and also thanks to a possibility of remote control of personnel, - Teslenko says.

It is important to provide timeliness of a meeting with the client, to notify him on arrival time of the employee by method, convenient for the client, - through SMS, e-mail, messengers, he added.

Also cost reduction on operating activities of the organizations is important, Evgeny Teslenko noted.

In some cases technologies allow to refuse use of stationary jobs and to transfer information, necessary for work, to the tablet of the exit employee. For example, it is possible at the organization of process of exit collecting. Also similar solutions allow to take transactions of exit service off the payroll, to use resources on an outsource, - the representative of Magenta Technology explains.

You should not forget also about the matters of safety of personal data referred on mobile jobs. Magenta Technology expects increase in demand for the solutions capable to exclude leak personal data in the course of its use.    

Speaking about priorities of the company for 2018, Evgeny Teslenko selected continuation of development of the solution based on the logistic Maxoptra platform  for process optimization of collection, delivery of cards, exit RKO, service of ATMs, exit collecting.

The manager with key clients of NAG Artur Salikhov told participants of a session that his company is engaged in consulting, development and production of hardware solutions and also the software, the central office is in Yekaterinburg, aggregate turnover – more than 4 billion rubles.

The company offers the clients:

  • container DPCs;
  • solutions on connection of the data centers carried on distances from 10 to 1000 km by means of optical transport;
  • creation of IT and network infrastructure of data centers with uniform command center all devices;
  • the solution for monitoring of ATM network implemented, for example, in one of territorial subdivisions of Sberbank;
  • software and cloud solutions.

О TAdviser SummIT

The TAdviser SummIT conference took place in Moscow on November 29, 2017 and attracted more than 400 participants. Principal themes of an action are IT plans of the largest companies and state departments of Russia for 2018, perspectives of development of digital economy, IT products and services. Within a plenary part and five thematic sections more than 60 reports and public discussions were heard. The action took place in 5 Digital October halls.
