2022: Stop advertising sales in Russia

On March 4, 2022, Google announced the suspension of advertising sales in Russia. Advertising is not available both in the search engine and in YouTube and partner networks. The corresponding notification also appeared in the advertising office.

Google stopped selling advertising in Russia

On March 3, 2022, Roskomnadzor demanded that Google stop distributing fakes in advertising. The regulator said that such advertising messages appear on the YouTube and contain misinformation aimed at creating "distorted perception of events and creating protest moods" among Russian users[1]

On February 28, 2022, Roskomnadzor threatened to block sites for advertising with "inaccurate socially significant information" in Google Ads in Ukraine and demanded that Google limit such ads. In addition, the regulator warned the owners of Russian sites and advertising networks about fines for distributing contextual advertising with fake data. The amount of fines is up to 5 million rubles under Art. 13.15 Administrative Code.

Earlier, Google banned the Russian state media from buying or selling advertising using its technologies. The company cited its policy, which prohibits the use of marketing related to military operations, with the exception of protest or anti-war advertising.

In addition to Google, Twitter also decided to suspend sales of online advertising in the Russian Federation.

The co-founder of the virtual marketer Max, Yury Panov, in a conversation with Izvestia, said that after the suspension of Google advertising sales, the business will begin to switch to advertising in Yandex and VK.

2021: Theft of cryptocurrency for 500 thousand dollars using Google Ads

On November 15, 2021, the Check Point Research (CPR) team from Check Point Software Technologies warned of fraud using Google Ads to steal cryptocurrency wallets. Recently, company experts recorded a similar theft of cryptocurrency worth hundreds of thousands of dollars.

As reported, at the top of the Google search page, attackers place ads that mimic the popular Phantom and MetaMask crypto shelves. Cybercriminals expect that users will not notice the substitutions, will go over the announcement and enter passwords from their wallets on fake pages.

Previously, as a rule, phishing letters were distributed through e-mail. Now the following trend has appeared: fraudsters are trying to get to the crypto wallets of users through Google Ads.

Fraud Scheme:

  • Cyber bullies place ads on Google - and set it up so that it appears first in search queries related to cryptocurrency wallets.
  • The user clicks on a malicious announcement on Google.
  • Then the victim gets to a phishing site, which looks very similar to the original wallet site.
  • A fake site tries to steal a user's password (if he already has a wallet); or provides a password code for the wallet created.
  • In both cases, attackers gain access to the victim's wallet and can steal its entire cryptocurrency.

For example, for the domain "phantom.app," the CPR team discovered such variants of phishing sites: phanton.app or phantonn.app, or even various extensions, such as.pw and others.

Damage to CPR victims found 11 hacked wallet accounts. Each of them contains from one to ten thousand dollars. It is known that some of the funds were withdrawn by attackers even before the detection of fraud by the Check Point Research team. Based on records from the Reddit forum, where victims talked about theft, CPR researchers estimated that over the last weekend of October 2021, more than 500 thousand dollars were stolen.

We discovered a scheme that allowed fraudsters to quickly steal cryptocurrency for a huge amount. Traditional email phishing may fall into the background: mainly cybercriminals will use ads on Google. In this case, keywords were carefully selected for each ad so that they stand out in the search. And phishing sites on which victims were redirected were almost indistinguishable from the original pages of cryptocurrency wallets. Most worrying is that several groups use keywords in Google Ads at once. Most likely, this indicates the success of these phishing campaigns, so in the future we expect only an increase in such attacks. We recommend that each cryptocurrency owner check the addresses they go to several times and not click on ads related to this topic.

In order to protect yourself from such fraud, you need the following:

  • Look at the URL in the browser to see if the extension is in front of you or the site. Only the extension can create a password.
  • Find the extension icon. Only the extension will contain the appropriate icon and URL of the Chrome extension
  • Never tell me your passwords. Moreover, no one should ever ask them. The password is requested only when creating a wallet.
  • Ignore ads. When looking for a wallet or platform for trading and sharing cryptocurrency, you should always look at the first site in search, and not at advertising.
  • Always double-check URLs.

2018: Rebranding Advertising Business

On June 27, 2018, Google announced the largest rebranding in its advertising business. The company refused to use the names DoubleClick and AdWords, preferring to divide its products into three main areas:

Google has the largest rebranding in the advertising business

 The Google Marketing Platform brand  will combine the services of DoubleClick Digital Marketing  (for advertisers)  and Google Analytics 360 Suite. The platform will help marketers plan, acquire, measure  and optimize everything related to  digital media  and consumer experience. 

New advertising solutions at Google were called more intuitive compared to their predecessors and reflecting the company's approach in how it helps advertisers and publishers find customers and choose services that meet the needs of their business.

Especially for small companies, Google Ads will have a new advertising campaign based on machine learning. With it, advertisers will be able to create ads in just a few minutes. This will allow the business to focus on more important and basic issues.

Google Senior Vice President Sridhar Ramaswamy said that previously advertisers were confused when they needed to go to Google AdWords and buy ads on the YouTube. The Google Ads platform should become an "open door" covering all areas, he said.[2]
