2018: Announcement of development of a distribution kit
In August, 2018 Intel announced development of the new highly reliable operating system intended for the specialized automated means in which security is crucial. Linux distribution kit which received the name Intel Safety Critical Project for Linux OS is based on the Intel Clear Linux platform.
As Imad Sousou told, the vice president of Intel and the general manager of division of Open Source Technology Center, the project is open source focused on use in production systems, robots, drones and cars — where reliable stable work is required, and failures can have serious effects.
First of all, it is about the human-computer interface when robots and people closely interact among themselves. The distribution kit will ensure safety of systems in which, for example, pilotless vehicles or drones move independently or with the minimum user intervention.
OS will help "to producers of the autonomous and crucial systems to pass from systems which sometimes require thousands of microcontrollers and electronic control units, to systems using the productive and safe multinuclear solution", Souso noted.
The distribution kit combines a binary delivery pattern, aggregation of packets in sets, the effective system of installation of updates and the automated development process and preparation of releases.
The solution of Intel will allow to use uniform physical infrastructure as for accomplishment of critical tasks, and normal processes to which special requirements to reliability are not imposed. A system will be initially expected use on multicore systems without damage of reliability. Except work directly over the equipment (bare metal) the opportunity of use of virtualization for separate start of the guest systems with critical applications will be given.[1]
