Investments into biometrics

.

2018: Airlines invest in biometrics for improvement of passenger experience

The biometrics becomes a part of the developing system of self-service at the different airports of the world. Data of the Air Transport IT Insights SITA 2018 overview provided by the company on September 27, 2018 demonstrate to it. Within the next three years of 77% of the airports and 71% of airlines plan investments in large projects or research works in the field of biometric identification.

According to the research SITA, the aviaindustry faces certain calls at implementation of biometric identification at different stages of preflight procedures. So, more than a third of airlines consider the main problems integration of tools and technologies into work of the airports and also lack of standards of use of similar technologies. The airports have a similar situation: 39% from them call the main problem need to conform to requirements of the legislation.

Airlines and the airports look narrowly also at the advanced technologies allowing to manage process of identification of passengers. One of them — a blockchain; 40% of airlines and 36% of the airports consider the main advantage of this technology an opportunity to accelerate process of preflight control — in particular, because of reduction of number of checks.

According to SITA, the greatest distribution in the world was gained by booths for independent registration of passengers. As of September, 2018 they are used already by 41% of the airports while 74% are going to implement technology until the end of 2021. The tourniquets for the independent boarding gate using documents with biometric data — such as passport, promise to become the industry standard too: 59% of the airports and 63% of airlines are going to apply them in the next three years.

In general the investment volume into IT into aviation industries grows, noted in SITA. The research in general shows that investments of airlines to this sphere in the last two years were stable, at the same time forecasts for 2018 for operating and capital expenditure impress: in 2018 airlines intend to select for development of IT 3.67% of income, the airports — 5.69%.

Airlines also invest in advanced technologies which can give them strategic and operational advantages. The artificial intelligence (AI) is considered as one of key tools for optimization of a number of business processes. Till 2021 are going to invest 84% of airlines in projects with artificial intelligence (against 52% according to a research of 2017). The same concerns the airports: 61% of air harbors will develop AI projects within the next three years while in 2017 their share made 34%.

In spite of the fact that invest both airlines, and the airports in artificial intelligence, they do it with the different purposes. So, airlines are focused on creation of virtual assistants and chat-bots: are going to use these services by 2021 85% of the companies. The airports apply or intend to apply AI technologies to predictive analytics to improve operational indicators, researchers explained.

In 2018 more than 180 Chief information officers of the leading players of the market — representatives of 39% of the airports of the world and airlines which service 27% of a world passenger traffic participated in the research SITA 2018 Air Transport IT Insights.
