2018: Release of the application
In November, 2018 Samsung and Canonical released the Linux on DeX application allowing to start the Ubuntu operating system on mobile devices of the South Korean producer.
After the Linux on DeX installation on the smartphone or the tablet it is possible to load the modified Ubuntu distribution kit which will work in a separate container. In fact Linux platform turns into the separate mobile program in which it is possible to use many Linux-applications adapted for processor architecture of ARM.
As it is about the Samsung Dex function, the OS graphical interface is output to the monitor, and at connection of the keyboard and a mouse the gadget of Samsung turns into the desktop computer. At the same time with Terminal it is possible to work directly on the mobile device.
OS works in the full-screen mode. It is possible to return to the Android interface, having left the cursor at the top of or in the bottom of a window not less than for a second. In Ubuntu developers will be able to write the code in the C, C languages ++ and Java in the usual environment.
Linux on DeX exempts developers from tables, allowing them at any time and in any place to get media access of development of Linux as on the computer — it is said with the message of Samsung. |
For launch of Linux on DeX only Ubuntu 16.04 LTS is supported, but is going to expand number of distribution kits which can be started in Samsung Galaxy gadgets. Besides, there are restrictions for compatible devices (by November, 2018 only the Galaxy Note 9 smartphone and the Galaxy Tab S4 tablet) and digit capacity of processors (only for 64-bit CCPs are supported).
The number of the main system requirements for work of Linux on DeX in the smartphone and the tablet includes 4 Gbytes of operational and 8 Gbytes of a fixed memory.
The beta of Linux on DeX is available to downloading since November 12, 2018. The application can be installed only in Android Oreo.[1]
