2019: Start of the AI service allowing to speak by voice of any celebrity

At the end of February, 2019 the Massachusetts company Modulate.ai provided the AI service allowing to model in real time features of a voice, including to speak by voice of any celebrity.

Modulate uses generative and competitive networks (GAN) for capture and modeling of sound properties of a voice signal. This technology is beyond far simple voice filters and allows to speak by the voice characteristic of any age and a floor. Voice modeling by the time of start of service is not ideal, but expansion of the database will allow to solve this problem.

However, according to the cofounder and the CEO of the company Mike Pappas, this technology is created not for imitation celebrities. Modulate is focused on online games, such as Fornite or Call of Duty in which players can communicate with strangers via the microphone. Not all from them are ready to reveal the personality, and new AI service can come to the rescue of them. Such application is capable to improve game process, but also can become a basis for abuse of technologies.

Charles Seife, professor of New York University studying distribution of misinformation notes that Modulate is much more effective, than other technologies of modification of a voice. On the website Modulate the demonstration version of a voice of Barack Obama is submitted, and Mike Pappas claims that the similar result can be received for any voice with enough data for training of network.

He also added that the company does not intend to use voices of celebrities without their permission. However even if Modulate is capable to limit abuse of the technology, other companies can independently develop similar technology and make it available to malefactors.[1]
