Metro subscribers spend an average of an hour and a half a day and want to spend this time usefully, communicating, reading or working. For 2022, they downloaded almost 40% more data than in 2021, and demand for a high-quality high-speed connection underground will grow further. We are constantly expanding the network at new stations and upgrading the existing network. In 2022, we replaced the old equipment and laid a high-frequency slit cable in the tunnels of the busiest lines - Tagansko-Krasnopresnenskaya, Arbat-Pokrovskaya, Serpukhov-Timiryazevskaya and Kaluga-Rizhskaya, combined all the ranges involved to expand the capacity of the LTE network. Thanks to this, passengers can use the continuous Internet during the journey, without even downloading books and videos, and solving their other tasks, "said the technical director of the Moscow region of MTSVladislav Medvedev.

2022:60% increase in mobile internet speed

On November 18, 2022, MTS PJSC announced that as a result of the ongoing network modernization in the Moscow metro, the average speed of mobile Internet in subway tunnels increased by more than one and a half times to 50 Mbps.

The company replaces equipment at all stations, crossings and tunnels of the metro, is reconfiguring the network in order to fully use the potential of the current LTE standard. To do this, all five radio bands used on the MTS network are combined, which increases the data transfer rate and network capacity. These measures allow subscribers to stably use the Internet even with a large crowd of passengers.

Work on the modernization of equipment and aggregation of the frequency range was carried out on the busiest metro lines - Koltsevaya, Serpukhovsko-Timiryazevskaya, Tagansko-Krasnopresnenskaya, Arbatsko-Pokrovskaya and Zamoskvoretskaya lines, which carry more than a million passengers daily. By the end of 2022, work will be completed on the Big Ring and Kaluga-Riga lines, on the rest of the sections - in 2023.

96% of MTS subscribers in the metropolitan metro actively use the Internet. Since the beginning of 2022, the volume of transmitted data in the MTS network in the subway has grown by more than 20%. Here, residents of the metropolis read news, communicate on social networks, watch films and videos, work and study. For November 2022, the speed from station to station may be different, but it is sufficient to solve most problems, "said Vladislav Medvedev, technical director of the MTS Moscow region. - We will continue to modernize the network in the metro so that communication remains continuous and stable in all its sections. Our task is to make sure that the quality of communication services underground is the same as on the surface.

4G network completion

On October 2, 2019, it became known that MTS PJSC completed the construction of a 4G network in all tunnels and stations of the Moscow Metro.

The maximum mobile speed Internet at stations can reach 200 megabits per second due to aggregation of the 1800 and 800 Megahertz bands. Average speeds with regular passenger traffic will be about 35 megabits per second and will allow you to correspond to, messengers check social networks or, email play online games and continuously watch streaming video while the train is moving. Metro passengers spend more than 70% of mobile Internet traffic on these services. Vo technology is also available to subscribers, LTE which allows the provision of voice services on the 4G network.

The Moscow Metro is an integral part of the transport infrastructure of an actively developing metropolis. Almost nine million people use it every day, many of whom are MTS customers. On average, Muscovites spend 20 hours a month on the subway, which can be spent with maximum benefit. Providing high-quality communication throughout the city, including on its key transport arteries, is the main priority of MTS in the Moscow region. Our connection helps Muscovites save the most valuable resource - time, and we are ready to continue to strengthen the technological base for the further implementation of Moscow's sustainable development strategy, which is possible only on the basis of a powerful telecommunications infrastructure,
noted the director of MTS in the Moscow region Pavel Kuznetsov

2017: MTS was the first in the world to build a cellular network in the metro based on Wi-Fi

The mobile operator Mobile Telesystems (MTS) and the Maxima Telecom company launched a joint project at the beginning of the year to improve the quality of communication in the Moscow metro. We are talking about the installation of UMTS (3G) femtocells in metro cars connected to the Maxima Telecom network[2] was[3]

Since 2013, Maxima Telecom have been build a Wi-Fi network with Wi-Fi Internet access in the metropolitan metro. Wi-Fi routers are installed in the cars, which are connected via a proprietary protocol to a wireless transport "Maxima Telecom."

Communication within tunnels

At the beginning of 2016, Maxima Telecom won the Moscow metro tender for the installation of femtocells in metro cars. Femtocell is a miniature base station that connects to the Internet channel and provides access to the cellular network from the premises.

In 2016, Maxima Telecom agreed with MTS to jointly implement a project to install femtocells. Maxima Telecom purchased femtocots of the Japanese corporation NEC, which by the beginning of 2017 were installed in cars on most metro lines.

Thanks to femtocells, the quality of communication for MTS subscribers inside the metro tracks should improve. We are talking about voice communication, SMS-messages and data transmission at speeds sufficient for operation Internetmessengers-. At the same time, for example, it may not be enough to watch video speeds obtained at the expense of femtocells, and it will be better for the subscriber to connect to the Maximetelecom Wi-Fi network.
