2019: Solution description

On March 5, 2019 the company Nokia announced the gateway FastMile 5G Gateway which will help to operators to upgrade the existing networks LTE, to gain an additional income from fixed wireless access (Fixed Wireless Access, FWA) and to accelerate deployment of 5G networks. The gateway FastMile 5G Nokia works in the same range of a 5G (up to 6 GHz) which will be used by operators for upgrade of LTE networks that will allow to expand coverages for the fixed wireless access and advanced mobile broadband services (enhanced mobile broadband, eMBB), the developer considers.

According to Nokia, by 2022 the market of FWA will grow approximately by 50% from 18.5 million to 27.5 million households. Operators even more often use FWA technologies for business development and monetization of services. A crucial role in support of services of broadband access will be played by 5G networks which by 2022 will occupy in the market of FWA a share in 16%.

According to the developer, the solution FastMile 5G Nokia represents the hardware device which can be installed easily in premises and to connect to a mobile network through wireless channels. The company noted the following features of the solution:

  • The gateway provides to house subscribers gigabit speeds on the basis of standard 3GPP 5G New Radio (NR).
  • Using aggregation bearing, the gateway increases performance and reliability of network, selecting the most reliable signals 4G and 5G.
  • This solution easily is established by the principle of a Plug and Play and helps the subscriber to find an optimal point of installation where maximum capacity is provided using a visual system.
  • The compatibility with the house solution WiFi Nokia provides free ultrabroadband communication in any corner of the house.
  • The gateway FastMile 5G Gateway optimizes use of spectral resources and uses the antenna with gain amount (11dBi) that allows to increase twice a coverage in premises, three times to increase the capacity of the entering channels and five times – capacity of outgoing channels in comparison with traditional networks, claim in Nokia.

According to information for March, 2019 Nokia tests the gateways FastMile 5G Gateway at a number of operators, such as Optus which used the gateway FastMile 5G Nokia installed indoors to stream transfer on real network video services 4K to the selected group of house subscribers.

"The systems of the fixed wireless access of a 5G allow operators to offer ultrabroadband services to house subscribers and corporate customers. But in addition, well thought over solutions allow the subscriber to install independently these devices in the houses. As a result the operator does not need to send the specialists to places and load of service department considerably decreases, and the satisfaction of the customer, on the contrary, increases. 5G FWA becomes the important ultrabroadband tool for all operators as demand for bandwidth increases and expectations of users grow".
