2021: The Ministry of Internal Affairs has launched a system for recognizing the silhouettes of people and cars
As it became known on June 24, 2021, the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MVD) of Russia began to use a system that can recognize people and cars by silhouettes. The technology is developed by Ntechlab.
According to TASS, Ntechlab CEO Andrei Telenkov, the system works in five regions of the Russian Federation. In which subjects it is used, Telenkov did not specify.
He noted that the system can "track the trajectory of a person," count people and look for them by silhouettes. When recognizing outwardly similar people, she will take into account other signs, such as gait or height, it will also be possible to look for a person by glasses, hat or beard.
Similarly, the technology works with cars. The system can recognize vehicles even from cameras, where it is not very clearly visible and it is impossible to recognize the registration number or only a small part of the car is visible. According to Andrei Telenkov, the algorithm helps identify the car, determining its color, brand and individual features.
The authorities are also interested in technology. It is already used in Latin America in the public transport system and in the CIS countries in various projects, as well as in Russia and abroad at construction sites and in sports analytics, said Ntechlab CEO. According to him, the countries of the Middle East show interest in the system, in the near future the company will hold talks with one of the capitals in the region.
The main areas of application of technology are regional video analytics, transport management, construction projects, trade, commercial real estate and shopping centers, Telenkov added.
Moscow authorities use the Ntechlab facial recognition system to search for violators of the law. During the lockdown, it was used to search for violators of the self-isolation regime.[1]
2019: Police in Russia begin to use wearable facial recognition cameras
May 22, 2019 it became known about the use by Russian police of wearable cameras with the function of facial recognition. Devices for the Ministry of Internal Affairs were developed by NtechLab.
The fact that the police began to test video recorders recognizing faces was told to the Vedomosti newspaper by an employee of the ministry and a person who knows this from top managers. NtechLab The representative of the company confirmed to the publication the creation of such a camera for employees of law enforcement agencies and security services, but did not comment on the fact of testing the equipment of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
One of the employees of the Ministry of Internal Affairs told Vedomosti that if the experiment passes successfully, then the facial recognition function will be introduced into portable DVRs that are already used by police.
The devices developed in NtechLab are similar to small walkie-talkies that are attached to clothes. Cameras separate individuals from a stream of people and compare them with images in databases. If the faces match, then a notification will come to the device - on its back there is a screen for viewing photos and information about a person.
To transfer data, the camera uses Wi-Fi or a SIM card with the Internet connected. The device can recognize faces at a distance of 3.5-4.5 meters. The technology of the Russian company is used in cameras from Chinese Dahua Technology.
NtechLab wants to determine the needs of the market and expects to produce gadgets in small batches for specific customers. The company hopes that the cameras will be interesting to law enforcement agencies, the Russian Guard, and will also be useful for border control and the identification of stowaway passengers in public transport.
Earlier, the Moscow Department of Information Technology began testing smart glasses with built-in facial recognition technology from NtechLab that Moscow police wanted to equip in the future. [2]
