Project date: 2019/06

At the beginning of June, 2019 the school district Lokport-City in New York started system testing of face recognition and objects under the name Aegis. It is the first similar project in the USA.

According to the law allowing schools to buy educational engineering devices, such as iPad and notebooks, the district received $4.2 million and spent $1.4 million from them for installation of cameras and purchase of software in September, 2018. Aegis is described as "early warning system" which is capable to notify police on the revealed threats. The system created by the Canadian company SN Technologies can trace individuals in the territory of school. The persons who committed sexual offenses 2 or 3 degrees, persons who are forbidden to attend schools, and persons which are considered posing a threat treat them.

A system can also identify students and employees who were discharged of work. While it is not clear whether the school will use a system for monitoring of those who were detached for nonviolent crimes. It is known that Aegis deletes the finished shooting material in 60 days and will not register movement of students, employees and visitors who are not in the list of the persons which are subject to monitoring. Nevertheless, a system will have to analyze persons of all visitors of school to identify unwanted people. In addition to a possibility of recognition of certain persons, software it is capable to distinguish 10 types of weapon.

Pilot testing of a similar system raises many questions in a century of privacy protection. It is known that the systems of face recognition are far from perfect and often incorrectly identify women and color people. The union of civil liberties of New York asked Department of Education of the State of New York to block the project as it already occurred in San Francisco. However, if it does not happen, a system will begin to work fully at all schools of the district since September 1, 2019.[1]
