2019: The P2P-smartphone from China

The Oppo company developed the MeshTalk technology allowing to make calls without use of cellular networks. The idea means the decentralized data exchange between owners of the Oppo smartphones and almost complete independence of cellular operators and their terms of service including from the international roaming[1].

Technical features

The MeshTalk protocol is a hostless system of data transmission. The key feature of technology, in addition to work out of cellular networks, consists in sending range of a signal – users can be at distance to three kilometers from each other, writes a The Verge resource in June, 2019. Bluetooth And Wi-Fi in the work MeshTalk does not use modules too. Signal frequency and the object list, preventing its distribution, but, according to statements of Oppo is not given in the description of technology, for June, 2019 MeshTalk works at bigger distance in comparison with other similar technologies.

Actually, MeshTalk is P2P (peer-to-peer) network of data exchange without base stations, servers and other intermediate devices. Turning smartphones into a modern analog of the radio set, it provides to interlocutors the maximum confidentiality of a talk. The technology is hardwired in the form of the separate chip located on the smartphone motherboard. The module consumes an energy minimum at signal transmission, and when it is activated, the smartphone can hold on in standby mode up to three days (72 hours). At the same time the gadget will not spend energy for search of base stations as it occurs in a case using cellular networks.

Possibilities of technology

At the time of the announcement of MeshTalk it was expected not only voice calls, but also and transfer of short text messages – the SMS. At the current stage of the development the idea of Oppo gives the chance to integrate in P2P-network several devices in some kind of local networks and to organize group chats.

In addition, MeshTalk allows to increase the range of action of the created network. With it it is helped by the function of broadcast of signals implemented in it.

Scope of application and potential advantage

New development of Oppo will allow to stay in touch, actually, in an every spot on the globe – the main thing that at distance of three kilometers there was at least one more device with the MeshTalk chip. In the Russian realities the technology can be used in hardly accessible localities where there is no covering of cellular networks, even 2G (GSM), and other methods of communication with the outside world.

Also MeshTalk can be useful in extreme situations or when traditional cellular networks work with interruptions. One more obvious plus – an opportunity to considerably cut down expenses on cellular communication. However, economy on calls through telecom operators can be leveled by a difference in the cost of smartphones with MeshTalk and without it.
