At the end of August, 2019 the police of the 11th district of Chicago started a pilot project within which all employees received the Samsung smartphones instead of the bulky automobile systems.
Officers can use the smartphone for access to different notifications and also to viewing records of cameras in real time. Besides, police officers can connect smartphones to desktop computers in the car or police station to use the big screen and the keyboard when entering collected data.
It is also worth noting that mobile devices are integrated with the existing systems of department of police, for example, with the Center of support of acceptance of strategic decisions and the system of detection of shots ShotSpotter.
A system is supplied with the special software which facilitates work of the police officer, including check of vehicles and drawing up reports on incidents. The software also allows police officers to manage surveillance cameras (providing an inclination, panning and scaling) and to browse geospatial data. Besides, normal applications for Android will allow officers to write audiofiles, to take the picture and to leave notes.
At a press conference the chief of the Chicago police department Jonathan Lewin said that main advantage of a new system is the mobility. Besides, use of smartphones can lower the total costs of police station. According to one research conducted by request of Samsung, the police can save up to 15% in the first year and up to 32% in the years ahead due to use of the new communication system. Completely updating of the equipment in police station should end by the end of 2019.[1]
