Nike and Calvin Klein implemented a blockchain for control of deliveries of clothes by means of RFID tags

Customers: Nike Inc

Light industry

Product: Projects based on blockchain technology
Second product: Hyperledger Fabric

Project date: 2020/03

At the beginning of March, 2020 brands of Nike, PVH Corp (Tommy Hilfiger, Calvin Klein), HermanKay and retail sellers of Kohl and Macy's began to use a blockchain for control of deliveries of clothes using RFID tags.

The companies on production of clothes constantly face threat of counterfeit products, piracy and theft. The blockchain is capable to provide supply chain visibility and a controlled data stream about location of a product. The RFID Lab laboratory at the University of Auburn (Auburn University RFID Lab) developed the CHIP blockchain platform (CHain Integration Project) which is intended for control of deliveries of products from a production site to shop. The mentioned companies participated in the first stage of the project which successfully integrated data streams about products from different nodes of a supply chain from January to December, 2019.

RFID Lab reported that its solution was developed on the basis of a corporate blockchain of Hyperledger Fabric. In general about 21 partner, including Mojix, Avery Dennison, SML and IBM took part in the CHIP project. Besides, Walmart and Under Armour participate in the project, but they did not test a solution blockchain at the first stage.

The initiative of CHIP is based on developments of Project Zipper of RFID Lab laboratory in which use of RFID in retail networks of deliveries was studied. Now the blockchain is used to connect among themselves RFID, an electronic product code and other systems of capture of information and to provide uninterrupted data exchange for increase in efficiency of supply chains.

The blockchain is even more often used for tracking of a supply chain. So, the producer of luxury goods of LVMH and Microsoft together with ConsenSys verify authenticity of products on a blockchain platform using special tags.[1]
