2020: Announcement project

On May 19, 2020 Microsoft announced the project directed to unification of development of old and new Windows applications. Such initiative received the name Project Reunion, it was provided at the Build 2020 conference.

As declared in the company within this action, users spend totally to Windows 10  more than 4 trillion minutes  monthly that  75% more, than in 2019. To help developers to create even more innovations for 1 billion active devices on Windows 10, in Microsoft as emphasized in the company, Project Reunion was created. It is designed to provide easy integration between the program interfaces Win32 and Universal Windows Platform (UWP), providing a single platform for development with support of backward compatibility.

Before developers had to select between classical architecture of Win32 compatible to last versions of Windows, and UWP working at Windows 10.  The PCMag edition notes that it is still more Win32-applications for Windows, however UWP have an important advantage which should contribute to the active development of the platform: the programs created on it can be started on Xbox video game consoles, in web browsers and even on HoloLens devices. A shortcoming is that they do not work at Windows 7 OS in which there is no app store.

Developers using Project Reunion will be able to update already existing applications irrespective of in what programming language they are written — on C ++, React Native or.NET. API interfaces in them will be separated from a system to ensure correct operation of applications irrespective of the version of Windows. One of the first libraries of the project — native library of the WinUI 3 interface using which the application will correctly adapt and be scaled depending on the device.[1]
