GDDR2

GDDR2 is the modified, advanced standard of graphic memory of GDDR which differs in higher speed regulation characteristics.

Memory of GDDR2 standard of production of Infineon

The first assembly of memory on the basis of GDDR2 technology was applied in video payments of nVidia GeForce FX 5800. However, it should be noted that GDDR2 is not full independent development, but a peculiar transition from DDR technology to more perfect DDR2 standard. Besides, it is absolutely wrong to consider that GDDR2 it the same, as DDR2. In particular, GDDR2 have no such important characteristic as input-output clock doubling. But because this type of memory conceptually belongs to the DDR family, GDDR2 is not saved from their main shortcoming - excessive overheating during operation because of the high tension used by a system. For this reason the developer company of ATI practically at once started release of GDDR3 which was designed to implement DDR2 technology advantages, to be exempted from its shortcomings and, at the same time, to add several opportunities characteristic of video memory. And though GDDR3 almost completely forced out now GDDR2, the confusion with formats still proceeds because there were many devices and several intermediate modifications of graphic cards which, according to producers, use GDDR2 standard. Some of these cards, really, use the DDR2 chips designed for use as a system memory. Nevertheless these chips are not capable to reach clock rates of GDDR3, but, at the same time, there is enough deshyova to use them as memory on intermediate modifications.
