Development and scope of application
The graphic memory card GDDR3 was developed by ATI Technologies company together with JEDEC, and for the first time used by nVidia company in video payments of GeForce FX 5700 Ultra where it replaced GDDR2 used until then. Then GDDR3 was successfully applied in GeForce 6800 Ultra where it played a key role in maintenance of reasonable energy consumption in comparison with the previous GeForce 5950 Ultra model. ATI began to use GDDR3 technology since the Radeon X800 series. Sony selected GDDR3 for the graphic processor of the game console PlayStation 3. Microsoft Xbox 360 is delivered with memory of GDDR3 with an amount of 512 MB. Besides Microsoft of the first used GDDR3 as a system memory and not just as video memory.
Characteristics
Technology base and the main characteristics of GDDR3 honor same as well as at GDDR2. Difference of this assembly the lowered tension is main that energy consumption led to reduction because of what all system heats up less and also higher clock rate. It allowed to increase the capacity of modules of memory and to simplify the cooling system. This type of memory uses internal breakers thanks to what it copes with processing and information transfer better. For capacity growth of GDDR3 for two frequency cycles transfers the 4th data bit from each output.
Advantages
The gating (pulse) signal of GDDR3 in difference from GDDR2 is unidirectional and has an unbalanced output (Uni Directional & Single-ended). It means that in an access time separate processes of reading and rewriting of pulse data happen quicker than GDDR2 had it. Memory of GDDR3 has architecture, other than the previous versions: in particular it was succeeded to reduce an interference of other systems that provided big stability of all system with frequencies about 800 MHz. At GDDR3 also hardware reset of potential is provided that allows to take all data from memory and only then to reboot it.
