GDDR4

GDDR4 is the fourth version of the standard of the computer re-recorded volatile memory used in graphic accelerators. Was not widely adopted in the market because of a small gain of performance concerning GDDR3 and high cost.

Appointment and application of GDDR4

GDDR4 is the last standard of video memory to the approved JEDEC. The main purpose - to replace nowadays obsolete GDDR3 standard. At the moment GDDR4 memory is used in payments of ATi Radeon X1950, and their main competitor of nVidia applies it in the payments of the last generation from the GeForce 8 series.

Distinctive characteristics of GDDR4

The main innovations of a new format concern implementation of two new technologies: DBI (Data Bus Inversion) and Multi-Preamble which reduce waiting time and allow to make preliminary selection the 8th data bit instead of the 4th as at GDDR3 standard. Also 8 banks of memory are provided in GDDR4. And to data processing and graphics GDDR4 standard applies technology of synchronization of the gating and clock pulses. As a result of GDDR4 having the same capacity, as GDDR3 works at twice smaller frequency and voltage only 1.5 V. Other advantage of GDDR4 standard is the lowered energy consumption. Transferring data with speed of 2.4 GB / with, a system consumes energy 45% less than GDDR3 standard with capacity of 2.0 GB / page.
