2020: Start of service
On July 6, 2020 the AWS Outposts service got support of service Amazon Relational Database Service thanks to what clients had an opportunity to create the RDS databases in own data centers. New cloud DBMS received the name Amazon RDS on Outposts and is already available to clients.
It for launch supports two types of the RDS databases: MySQL 8.0.17 and PostgreSQL 12.2. Amazon of RDS is a completely managed service which allows clients to start, use and scale a relational database in the simplified format, without worrying about a core infrastructure or overheads.
As notes the edition ZDNet, Amazon RDS on Outposts became one of the first DBaaS services (the database as service) managed by vendor which can function in client DPCs. Earlier similar solution was proposed by Oracle — it is called Exadata Cloud at Customer.
The analyst of Omdia Tony Baer says that AWS Outposts there is still not enough opportunity to store all data locally, and at the same time service cannot replicate or manage data in several regions for ensuring high availability and disaster recovery of data. Instead all transactions with data, backup and recovery are tied to AWS region though, according to Bayer, it can change in the future. The expert also considers that support of new databases will be added to AWS Outposts.
The analyst of Constellation Research Holger Müller (Holger Mueller) in a conversation of SiliconANGLE noted that Amazon of RDS is important addition for AWS Outposts which should help to compete better products with similar services from other producers, such as Azure Stack, Oracle Cloud at Customer and Google Cloud Anthos.[1]
