Skoltech was engaged in development of an open 5G platforms for operators

On September 14, 2020 it became known of purchase of the software of the American company Radisys by Skoltech. Thanks to this acquisition the Skolkovo institute of science and technologies was engaged in creation of an open 5G platforms for telecom operators.

According to Kommersant with reference to the Russian Venture Capital Company (RVCC), Skoltech purchased at Radisys a complete program stack on architecture of OpenRAN (allows to combine different solutions on network at the expense of open interfaces) for base stations 4G and 5G.

Skoltech started development of an open 5G platforms for operators

This project is implemented within the state program of the Leading Research Centers (LRC). LRC based on Skoltech was created in 2020, as operator of selection LRC within the national program "Digital Economy" RVC acts. The grant in the amount of 300 million rubles will be selected for program implementation of the center.

We acquired absolutely unique rights to software. They include the right to a full ownership, development and sale of software by Skoltech based on the product Radisys in source codes. It means what is completely localized by software in the Russian Federation. Any products on its base are domestic and have no restrictions from the foreign companies — the head of LITS of Skoltech Vitaly Shub whose words are cited by the edition emphasized.

Based on the purchased software Skoltech will create software solutions for base stations. The main buyers of such products are operators and also manufacturing companies wishing to create the domestic telecom equipment.

The head of Softline Group Sergey Monin also notes that now operators "treat this story with care" as Skoltech the new player in the market. If Skoltech finds the partner who will be able to support development at the industrial level and to provide serious support of the solution, it, mister Monin considers, "will remove huge amount of risks for customers".^[1]
