Growth in sales of dental implants in Russia by 12% to 1.6 million packages

In 2023, 1.6 million packages of dental implants were sold in Russia, which is 12% more than a year earlier. Compared to 2019, the market volume grew by 81%, analysts at BusinesStat calculated. Their data was published in April 2024.

According to BusinesStat estimates, the growth rate of the Russian dental implant market has tripled. In 2022, sales of these products soared by 36% against the background of a sharp rise in demand in the context of an estimated shortage and an expected increase in cost both for the implants themselves and for their installation services.

In 2023, the domestic dental implant market remained at the stage of active growth and development, researchers say. According to them, a large number of people in the country need to replace lost teeth and choose implants as the most effective and durable way to restore the dentition.

Another catalyst for the growth of the Russian dental implant market is associated with the professional growth of dentists and access to training programs. Doctors are increasingly aware of the benefits of implants and take special courses to master this modern technique. This contributes to the expansion of the range of specialists offering implantation and improves the quality of the services provided, the study says.

According to analysts, in 2023 the situation in the dental implant market stabilized "at a new equilibrium level after the shock 2022."

Dental implants are divided into extraosseous (fixed during natural loss or atrophy of the jaw bone in the tissues of the periosteum or gum) and intraosseous (installed directly into the bone of the upper or lower jaw).[1]

In Russia, created a smart material for the rapid creation of products for leveling teeth

On February 26, 2024, Russian researchers from the University of Science and Technology MISIS (NITU MISIS) announced the development of a new heat-sensitive material that can be used to create protective biological coatings for medical use. This, in particular, can be products for orthodontic dentistry (for example, when creating eliners), including for equalizing teeth.

We are talking about the use of thermoplastic polyurethanes - special materials that, when the shape of the product changes, remember their initial state and can return to it when external conditions change, such as temperature, humidity or lighting. The substance created by Russian scientists consists of incompatible soft and rigid blocks that form a complex nanostructure after cooling to room temperature. The researchers found that it is possible to change the mechanical properties of such a material by modifying the crystal structure of soft blocks when heated. The result is influenced by various parameters - crystallization conditions, heating temperature and chemical composition.

A new material for creating eliners has been developed

Project participants say smart polyurethanes can be used in creating coatings for medical devices and implants to protect against corrosion and improve biocompatibility. In addition, adaptive materials for orthodontic parts can be obtained.

In the case of such structures in the dental field, researchers highlight several key advantages over analogues. These are increased mechanical strength, biocompatibility, high ability to restore shape (over 90% of the original), the ability to control the speed of recovery and the force of pressure on the teeth. This is claimed to reduce the cost of treatment, reduce the use time of orthodontic plates and filaments, and make heat-sensitive materials safer.[2]

A dental implant made of nanotitanan has been created in Russia, withstanding a pressure of 1200 kg

On March 16, 2023, NS Technologiya informed Zdrav.Expert about the registration of Dental Synthesis dental implant made of durable biocompatible titanium. According to the company, the product can replace imported analogues. The start of serial production of products is scheduled for March 2023. In particular, in the near future, the National Assembly of Technology expects to supply 150 thousand implants to 300 polyclinics in 12 regions of Russia. Read more here.

2021: Creating a fiberglass denture frame

On March 12, 2021, it became known about the creation in Russia of a frame for dentures based on fiberglass. It is 78% stronger than the plastic analogue. Scientists of the Perm National Research Polytechnic University (PNIPU) noted the new development. Read more here.

2020: VSMPO-Avisma began supplying more raw materials for dental implants

As it became known on November 17, 2020, the world's largest titanium manufacturer VSMPO-Avisma began to supply more raw materials for dental implants after falling orders from customers in the aircraft industry, including Boeing and Airbus. The company also increased shipments to manufacturers of welded pipes.

In an interview with RBC, VSMPO-Avisma CEO Sergei Stepanov noted that the company sees growth in medicine, for example, in the field of dental implants.

This is a global business. Growth in this segment is 15-20%. The demand in the industrial sector is increasing - for flat rolled products and welded pipes. Customers are mainly power and chemists, "he said.

According to VSMPO-Avisma, about 4 thousand tons of titanium devices are implanted in people around the world every year. Titanium alloys are used today to replace femoral and knee joints, strengthen the spine, in the treatment of the maxillofacial and craniofacial regions, to create pins, bone plates, fixators, cardiovascular devices, dental implants, external prostheses and surgical instruments.

According to Stepanov, the share of titanium supplies for Boeing occupies 20% of the company's revenue (about $250 million), but it will decrease in the coming years, although the American corporation will remain a key partner of VSMPO-Avisma.

Stepanov explained that at the beginning of 2021, the corporation expects the placement of orders for the supply of this metal. He spoke about the restoration of air travel in China, where the industry has already recovered from the pandemic and reached pre-crisis levels. In other countries, a coronavirus vaccine will be able to help with this.

The head of VSMPO-Avisma noted that in 2020-2021 the company will be engaged in anti-crisis management, reducing the investment program and balancing cash flows.[3]
