2020: Transfer of computing resources to a private cloud

The Deutsche Telekom IT Solutions RUS company, strategic IT division of Deutsche Telekom, large telecommunication company in Europe, reduced time for providing to developers and programmers of computing resources and environments. The company managed to transfer quickly and safely them to a private cloud thanks to the VMware Cloud Foundation platform.

Deutsche Telekom IT Solutions RUS for December, 2020 works more than 2000 IT specialists, the majority of whom — developers and testers. Daily they have a need for computing resources and test environments which help to test new software, to check hypotheses and to test different versions of software. But processing of requests for providing resources took from several hours to several days. In addition, resources of technical support which specialists did it manually were spent.

To reduce time for processing of requests and also to accelerate product development process, the company had a need to find the tool which will ensure coordination and safety of IT infrastructure in private clouds. Having studied the solutions presented at the market and relying on the experience, Deutsche Telekom IT Solutions RUS selected the solution VMware Cloud Foundation. It helped to transfer all resources and environments to a private cloud thanks to what programmers and testers began to receive necessary resources in 20-30 minutes instead of 1-2 days. Also the solution helped to unload technical support specialists and opened possibilities of virtualization: for example, with its help the company created virtual laboratories for training courses for programmers.

For testing of the tool only 3 months left. At this stage VMware helped the customer with licenses, consultations and with the equipment. The stage passed test for short terms therefore the customer made the decision to scale it. Less than in 2 months of Deutsche Telekom IT Solutions RUS together with a project team of VMware it was succeeded to integrate the necessary equipment, to deploy the solution, to fill the directory with templates of machines, to write the automation equipment for order management of resources and to perform tuning of rules of information security. Ensures safety of the project the solutions for granular setup which are built in a product network security thanks to which the company could configure safety rules under each business challenge.

Notable advantage was also the fact that the company managed to reduce costs for the physical equipment due to application of VSAM — a virtual method of data storage. Earlier the customer used physical system devices of data storage, but now there is no urgent need in external DWH.

From VMware we work with products since 2011. For example, several years we use the platform of centralized operation by end devices based on AirWatch Workspace ONE. During cooperation the company became our reliable partner who gives full support when implementing projects. It became one of decisive factors when choosing a new solution. VMware Cloud Foundation helped to unroll in short terms in our systems a private cloud and to translate there all computing resources and environments.
