2021: The announcement of a surgical instrument of Sensei for detection of cancer in lymphatic system

At the end of January, 2021 the Lightpoint Medical company developing surgical instruments for intraoperative detection of cancer released the robotic gamma probe Sensei. It is intended for intraoperative detection of sentry lymph nodes and also cancer metastases in lymphatic system. Developers note that this technology can be applied at all main types of cancer, including lung cancer, a thick gut, a stomach, gynecologic cancer and a prostate cancer.

Now surgeons have no opportunity to precisely estimate spread of cancer on lymphatic system during transaction that leads to a recurrence or removal of healthy fabrics. According to developers, Sensei allows to detect more precisely cancer damages of lymph nodes in real time at robotic surgery of tumors and to avoid these unpleasant ghost effects.

For detection of sentry lymph nodes of Sensei the location of radio ligands of SPECT, such as 99mTc-nanocolloid defines. At certain types of cancer also other tags can be used, for example, at surgery of a prostate cancer of Sensei can detect cancer metastases using antineoplastic medicines, such as 99mTc-PSMA (specific membrane antigen of a prostate).

Professor Declan Murphy, the surgeon of the oncological center of Peter McCallum in Melbourne (Australia), noted that he is glad to emergence in the market of such tool:

Our command very much hopes to use as soon as possible this technology during removal of a prostate cancer using the da Vinci robot. As one of the main research centers in the field of robotic surgery of a prostate cancer and molecular visualization using PSMA, we are extremely glad to the new perspectives opening when using Sensei.[1]
