Marriages and divorces in Russia

2020: Increase in the number of marriage contracts by 26%, up to 142.5 thousand - FNP

The number of marriage contracts in Russia in 2020 increased by 26% compared to 2019 and reached a record value - 142.5 thousand appeals. Such data are given in the Federal Notary Chamber (FNP).

According to RBC, citing disclosed statistics, the number of property sharing agreements during a divorce in 2020 increased by 8.3%. Citizens increasingly understand how these notary tools can help them in different life situations, explained in the FNP.

Often couples conclude a marriage contract when they plan to purchase housing on a mortgage. For example, a marriage contract is resorted to when one of the spouses for some reason cannot act as a co-borrower - because he does not have enough income or is not suitable for other parameters. If there is a marriage contract, this spouse does not risk anything in case of non-payment.

The notary chamber also advises concluding a marriage contract if one of the spouses carries risks as an entrepreneur. So it will be possible to protect the family's property from possible business problems.

At the same time, it is impossible to prescribe sanctions for treason or assault in the marriage contract, as well as establish a schedule for housekeeping or walking a dog, since in Russia this document regulates exclusively property relations, the notary chamber explained.

The agreement must be certified by a notary. The cost of the service in Moscow will cost 10.5 thousand rubles, in other regions the size of the tariff may vary slightly, the FNP said.

The number of marriages in Russia in 2020 decreased by 18.9% and amounted to almost 770.8 thousand, follows from the data of Rosstat. The growth in the number of marriages was observed only in February (by 31.6%), the largest decrease was in April, May and June. The number of divorces in 2020 decreased by 9.1%, to 564 thousand.
