2021: Ultrastar Edge Server Family Announcement

On June 16, 2021, Western Digital announced the launch of the Ultrastar Edge family of servers, with which it becomes possible to move computing operations closer to data generation points, which, in turn, will speed up their processing, reduce latency and simplify real-time decision making even if there is no connection to the network.

Ultrastar Edge Family

According to the company, in the modern environment of increasing use, 5G Internet companies IoT cloud computing and individuals expect that the speed of interaction with their applications and the level of performance will be at the right level. Such expectations create a demand for distributed smart architectures outside the core that DPC would facilitate the processing, analysis, and transformation of data in the immediate vicinity of primary (endpoint) devices. Moreover, since some enterprise applications are located and operate in remote locations (deserts, seas, jungle, etc.), there is a demand for stronger solutions for computing and data storage that could operate in places with an expensive, unstable or absent network connection.

Designed for cloud service providers, telecommunications companies, and system integrators, Ultrastar Edge servers are easily transported, deployed, and scaled in the field, as well as when placing a client server in a hardware provider ("bell"), production site, or remote data centers. The family includes an Ultrastar Edge-MR server for military and special purpose field teams operating in difficult remote conditions, and a portable 2U rack-mounted Ultrastar Edge server with a transportation case designed to be placed as a client server in the hardware provider and data centers located in close proximity to the data source. Both devices are already shipped in test mode and are available for ordering; in the open market they will appear at the beginning of the fourth quarter of 2021.

Due to the wider spread of time-sensitive applications, it has become necessary to increase computing power in peripheral locations of the network. We expect that by 2024, the pace of installation of servers near endpoints will double, and the total number of servers, according to our forecasts, will reach five million, since their availability is a prerequisite for the creation of products, the development of cloud services, remote production and administrative complexes and content delivery networks (CDN ) and almost any vertical industry based on the Internet of Things or data obtained from sensors or remote equipment. In today's world, the 5G world, and the Internet of Things, computing needs to be done as close as possible to the source of the data, that is, to the devices, end users, and equipment that generate the data, because success depends heavily on latency and throughput. We welcome Western Digital's arrival in this market segment.

From health care to intelligence operations, it is critical for the federal government and other authorities to quickly gather information to extract analytical data from it at the right place and at the right time, including in remote corners of the network. We are pleased to add an Ultrastar Edge-MR server to our equipment.

The Ultrastar Edge-MR is a robust and scalable solution designed and tested in accordance with MIL-STD-810G-CHG-1 in terms of shock and vibration resistance and MIL-STD-461G in terms of electromagnetic interference. The degree of protection of the device against moisture and dust complies with the IP32 standard. Whether it's a military operation, an Amazon search, or an exploration analysis of oil and gas fields, Ultrastar Edge-MR is ready to operate in extreme conditions. Both Ultrastar Edge solutions are equipped with Trusted Platform Module 2.0, which eliminates the possibility of opening without visible traces, and their design meets the FIPS 140-2 Layer 2 security standard, which creates the necessary conditions for storing, ensuring security, transmitting and distributing sensitive data.

Each Ultrastar Edge solution is based on a server that supports up to 40 cores with two processors Intel Xeon scalable 2nd generation processors, an NVIDIA T4 graphics processor, and eight Ultrastar NVMe SSD drives with up to 61 TB of storage. This combination provides the right speed and storage to perform real-time analytics, deep learning, training algorithms machine learning , and logical output and video transcoding even on the periphery of the network. The device has two slots - Ethernet at 50 GB and 100 GB, which serve to send critical data to or cloud to the data center when there is a connection.
