Import of servers and DSS to Russia increased by 15% over the year

In parallel, companies were looking for ways to access equipment from familiar brands. Parallel import schemes have been launched, but problems have arisen with products imported in this way: lack of guarantee, constant difficulties with payments and unpredictable delivery times. It will be the financial sector, state-owned companies, various industrial enterprises. Even retailers will be hooked, since all modern IT infrastructure is built on servers.

Svetlana Appolonova, Chairman of the Council of the Association of Manufacturers of Electronic Equipment and Devices, also drew attention to the problem. She told Forbes that the lack of servers "will hit absolutely all companies in technological areas" due to the fact that this equipment "is responsible for storing, processing and transferring data."

According to experts interviewed by Forbes, the danger of a shortage arose not only because of AMD and Intel that left Russia. These are the largest developers (and Intel is also a manufacturer) of CPUs for desktop PCs and servers in the world, but in Russia there are companies working in this direction.

IDC: Server hardware market up 7.6% to $1.035 billion

In the first half of 2017, 59,655 servers of all types arrived on the Russian market, which is 29% more than in the same period of the previous year. In money, there was a rise of almost 32% to $318.3 million.

IDC senior analyst for corporate systems Mikhail Popov says the Russian server market has returned to growth in real and monetary terms after four and a half years of supply decline. According to the expert, the worst times for the market are likely to have passed, given the plans of large customers and the pace of construction of infrastructure facilities.

According to IDC data for January-June 2017, Hewlett Packard Enterprise is the leader in the Russian server market. The five largest manufacturers accounted for 64.3% of equipment supplies, and the share of Russian vendors increased to 34.8% from 34% in the first half of 2016.

On April 13, 2017, the analytical company IDC published brief results of a study of the Russian server market. Its volume was the lowest in many years.

According to experts, in 2016 102,033  servers were delivered to Russia, which is 4.5% less than in 2015. In monetary terms, the market fell 20.1% to $531.3 million.

The IDC study also says that in 2016, the average cost of servers on x86 and RISC architectures decreased by 7.4% and 16.8%, respectively, which analysts attribute to the customer's focus on systems of moderate capabilities of the small and medium price segment.

On September 30, 2016, IDC analysts published new results of the EMEA Quarterly Server Tracker summary, which, among other things, reflects the state of affairs in the Russian server market. The share of domestic vendors decreased by 19%.

Experts calculated that in the second quarter of 2016, 27,923 servers were delivered to Russia in the amount of $140.24 million, which is 13.8% and 14.6% more than a year ago, respectively. According to IDC research, in 2013 the server market in Russia decreased by 9.9% compared to 2012, in supplies - 145,233 units. The market volume in monetary terms decreased by 29.3% to $890.1 million.

In 2013, the ratio of the number of products on the x86 platform to other solutions of the server architecture changed - a year ago, the volume of x86 deliveries amounted to 74.3%, in 2013 - 83.6% of the total number of delivered servers.

HP and IBM are leading in monetary terms in terms of the supply of servers of the standard architecture. They hold more than half of the market, but the share of other suppliers continues to show growth. In unit terms, DEPO Computers (Depot Electronics) is in second place.

IDC noted an increase in customer interest in small manufacturer solutions, despite budget cuts. The aggregate unit performance of such companies increased by tens of percent. Market drivers are still the development of cloud technologies and services. Deliveries to ISP and DPC segments show no decline.

The market for other server architectures also contracted: in monetary terms, by 36.7% compared to last year. This time, the decline was noted in all segments: sales of RISC systems fell by almost 25%, and in the mainframe segment the fall was close to 70%.

More than 9 thousand servers were delivered to the ISP segment (service providers Internet), but they could not keep the x86 server market from falling due to a noticeable deterioration in the situation in most sectors of the Russian economy.

HP and IBM are leading in terms of revenue in the standard architecture server market - more than 50% of the market. Analysts noted the second place of DEPO Computers (Depot Electronics) in the ranking of piece deliveries. This is partly due to the desire of customers to switch to more affordable solutions in the context of budget cuts, according to IDC.

During the quarter, according to IDC research, 45,470 servers of standard architecture were sold, which is 10.4% more than in the third quarter of 2012, but in annual terms equates to a 13.6% decline. The revenue of vendors is $235 million, which is 6.5% less than in the fourth quarter of 2011.

The server market of other architectures shows multidirectional dynamics:

  • EPIC server shipments fell more than 40% (mainframe share about 2% of the total server market).

Market leaders: IBM and HP. These companies, in total, account for more than 70% of deliveries in monetary terms. The revenue of most vendors decreased compared to the previous year, but Dell and Oracle managed to strengthen their position.

"Analyzing the results of 2012, we can conclude that the server market in Russia has largely exhausted the potential for further growth," said Alexander Zagnetko, head of the Corporate Systems research program. - Of course, purely technological factors, such as virtualization and hardware consolidation, as well as cloud technologies, also put pressure on this segment. However, in Russia there is a serious shortage of server solutions in a number of industries, and therefore the main reason for the reduction in supplies should be considered the economic and administrative problems of the country. Third quarter: Weak growth as solvent demand declines

In the third quarter of 2012, the Russian server market announced a negative direction of development, primarily in monetary terms. The IDC study notes a decline, both in comparison with the second quarter of 2012 and with the third quarter of 2011: enterprises bought 4,1220 servers of standard architecture - this is 21% more than in the previous quarter, but the annual increase is only 3.7%, while the revenue of vendors amounted to $188 million. There are signs of overstocking of warehouses, there is uncertainty about the structure and amount of funding for IT costs from a number of key customers, there is not enough money for the purchase of server equipment in many segments. Q2: Russian Server Market Under Threat

According to the quarterly IDC survey, in the second quarter of 2012, the Russian server market was stagnating, but showed positive dynamics in annual terms.

A total of 34,130 standard architecture servers were sold. This is 12% less than a quarter earlier and equivalent to an increase of only 2.5% in annual terms. Nevertheless, the revenue of manufacturers amounted to $185 million, which corresponds to an increase of 23.4% compared to the same period in 2011.

In the market of other servers, even taking into account a noticeable reduction in deliveries in unit terms, the completion of several large projects related to the introduction of RISC servers led to the fact that the revenue of suppliers increased to $83 million - 2.2% more than in the second quarter of last year.

In the second quarter, negative trends prevailed in the Russian server market and the players received most of the revenue due to the completion of long-term projects. Customers, against the background of a significant decline in oil futures and the depreciation of the ruble, postponed and frozen transactions related to the development of IT infrastructure, especially in the x86 server segment. Equipment procurement cycles suffered significantly in May and June.

The transition of some major international players to a new procedure for importing and registering equipment affected the final cost of servers for consumers, which put additional pressure on the market.

"Some server hardware deliveries have been moved from the first half of the year to the second. This was facilitated by both economic factors and a shortage of certain configurations due to technological reasons, "explained Alexander Zagnetko, IDC analyst. The second quarter of 2012 once again demonstrated the instability of the Russian market, and the number of threats to its further development over the past few months has only increased, the expert added.

Q1: 23.6% growth. HDD deficit persists

According to IDC, in the first quarter of 2012, the Russian server market declined slightly taking into account the seasonal factor compared to the previous quarter, but showed positive dynamics in annual terms.

A total of 38,700 standard architecture servers were sold. The revenue of manufacturers amounted to $176 million, which corresponds to an increase of 23.6% compared to the same period in 2011.

In the market of other servers - against the background of a decrease in deliveries in unit terms - the revenue of suppliers also increased to $49 million - by 7.7% more than in the first quarter of 2011.

To a certain extent, the market dynamics are affected by the deficit, HDD especially noticeable in the segment of entry-level solutions. In this regard, some players expect that by the end of 2012 there may be a deferred demand for such servers. At the same time, a kind of polarization is noticeable in the supply structure of server equipment: customers are interested in budget solutions and expensive systems, while mid-range equipment is less in demand.

Customer priorities are also changing with regard to the hardware of the infrastructure. It is no longer a starting point in determining the IT strategy, which is reflected in the increased demand for converged solutions that combine servers, DSS, and communication systems. Accordingly, virtualization is no longer considered as a technology focused only on the server segment. It should be noted that both the share of equipment deliveries to virtualized environments and the density of virtual servers are steadily increasing.

"If you look at the dynamics of the development of the Russian server market since 2010, it may seem that in our country it has a completely cloudless future," says Alexander Zagnetko, head of the Corporate Systems research program. - Compared to the first quarter of 2010, the server market almost doubled in monetary terms. However, one should approach the interpretation of this fact with caution. The state of the Russian economy causes more and more serious concerns, and therefore the extrapolation of the emerging trend for the long term will be incorrect. "

According to a quarterly study by IDC Russia Quarterly Server Tracker, 52.7 thousand servers of standard architecture were sold in Russia in the fourth quarter of 2011. Manufacturers' revenue amounted to $250 million, which corresponds to an increase of 26.4% compared to the same period in 2010.

In the other server market, sales of RISC systems continued to grow, while the share of EPIC architecture decreased. In general, the segment of "heavy" servers showed positive dynamics. The revenue of manufacturers amounted to $95 million - 30% more than a year earlier.

Mainly due to deliveries to the public sector, the share of Russian suppliers of standard architecture servers has noticeably increased. However, there is no need to talk about a new trend - most of the projects in this segment were somehow related to the elections, according to IDC materials.

2011 as a whole turned out to be very successful for equipment manufacturers, analysts of this company say. In monetary terms, the x86 server segment grew by 45%; shipments of other server systems increased by 20%. Due to the limitations of IT budgets and due to the improvement of the technological base, instead of "heavy" servers, customers are increasingly using servers of a standard architecture when performing resource-intensive tasks.

RISC systems will become the main catalyst for the heavy server market in 2012, but the combined share of UNIX architectures will continue to decline. It is noteworthy that the HPC segment is increasingly using GPU solutions.

The demand for low-cost servers of standard architecture will grow in the Russian market, which is due not only to the popularity of these solutions in the small and medium-sized business segment, but also to the construction of large data centers (primarily commercial ones), which use simple hardware platforms of the same type.

IDC expert Alexander Zagnetko noted that in 2011 the long-term trend in the development of the Russian server market recovered. "Analyzing the dynamics of this market, it is easy to make sure that the consequences of the crisis no longer affect it, but there are no more factors contributing to further rapid sales growth - such as pent-up demand."

The growth of the state segment is primarily associated with the development of an electronic interdepartmental turnover document, as well as a national program for the development of electronic public services to the population. The CROK believes that demand will continue in the banking sector, in insurance, in retail and also in government agencies.

There will also be growth in the segment of complex solutions for building a cloud infrastructure, but not individual ones will be supplied, but servers solutions that will include both servers and the DSS corresponding ones, ON the company's experts say.

Undoubtedly, the driver of the server market growth is the rapid growth of the Russian data center market. Internal data centers will be in demand in industries operating in the V2S segment: retail banks and insurance companies, telecoms, retail, where the personalization of sets of products and services provided to the end user can give an increase in the customer base and a significant increase in profitability. External data centers are operators of state data centers for electronic public services and telecom operators, which historically are the main owners of commercial data centers in Russia, explained in Technoserv.

In general, system integrators deny that the implementation of cloud solutions negatively affects sales of physical servers. So far, the share of cloud solutions in the market is not so large, and IT departments have many other tasks for processing large amounts of data, for which new equipment is needed. In addition, a number of cloud solutions and virtualization projects still require hardware platform upgrades.

There is a continuing trend in which virtualization-enabled solutions are becoming more widespread, with more consumers preferring x86 servers when designing their infrastructure, including in the blade form factor. IDC also notes a decline in prices for EPIC architecture servers. Over the past six months, hi-end machines of this architecture have more than doubled in price. The cost of a server in the initial EPIC segment decreased by an average of 20%.

The Russian server systems market largely repeats the trends of the global market, however, due to the fact that it is quite far from saturation, the growth rate is significantly ahead of the world and amounts to about 15-20% annually. The demand for server solutions in the Russian market is primarily due to the fact that the current infrastructure of many companies cannot cope with the new load. In some cases, we are talking about the need to replace outdated equipment that is no longer subject to warranty maintenance, and use the technologies of a new generation of servers.

The most notable trend in 2008 was the rapid increase in demand for server solutions from small and medium-sized enterprises and at the same time a slight reduction in orders from large companies. Frustrated by the impossibility of sharply increasing sales to large enterprises, market leaders are increasingly paying attention to the SMB sector. In particular, at IBM, the turn to small and medium-sized businesses has become a categorical requirement for all divisions offering software, hardware and services.

In 2008, the Russian server equipment market continued to grow steadily, but against the background of very controversial processes. So, unlike the developed Asian segments, as well as the United States and Europe, it still remains somewhat lopsided and conservative. Nevertheless, in terms of structure, the domestic sector has come close to European standards - the tendency to switch from Russian equipment to equipment of leading world manufacturers is obvious.

In 2008, there was an obvious change in priorities in the Russian market. If in 2007 there was parity between brand-free manufacturers and brands, then in 2008 large companies seized the advantage. According to ITResearch, in the server segment, the first five manufacturers of this class of equipment (in alphabetical order - Aquarius, Depot, HP, IBM and Craftway) control 72.7% of sales in physical terms.

This distribution is quite consistent with the established European market. At the same time, small local assembly companies (called Intel Premier Provider) grown by Intel continue to lose ground, and for many small and medium-sized businesses this is a rather sad fact. Nevertheless, the financial crisis gave impetus to the development of small enterprises, which will undoubtedly increase the total sales of this sector, analysts say.
