RISC OS is the operating system developed by Acorn Computers company for a series of the desktop computers using the central processor of architecture of ARM. The name of the operating system happens from RISC — architecture of microprocessors on which it was initially applied. The software platform consists of a core and modules superstructures, including the module with the simple window graphical interface and a set of simple applications is available.

RISC OS is intended mainly for the special built-in purpose computers on ARM chips. Assemblies are available to payments of Raspberry Pi, BeagleBoard, Iyonix, PandaBoard, Wandboard, RiscPC/A7000 and Titanium.

2018: Disclosure of source codes

In November, 2018 it became known of disclosure of the source codes RISC OS — the first operating system created for ARM processors

RISC OS graphical interface

Source codes are published under the license Apache 2.0 that will allow to attract to the project of supporters of open model of development and will allow to use free of charge the RISC OS code in third-party commercial products, without the need for purchase of the license.

This event took place after sale of Castle Technology  of RISC OS Developments company therefore the last became the owner of the assets connected with RISC OS.

According to the director of RISC OS Developments Andrew Rawnsley, because of closeness of the project many opportunities of RISC OS are earlier unavailable, and after change of the license on open it is possible to expect emergence of OS in new interesting projects.

RISC OS is fine demonstration of how well configured operating system and the user interface can give to the platform in respect of performance much. Transition to the free license open source should return interest in RISC OS — the chief executive of Raspberry Pi Eben Upton commented.[1]
