2021: Intel Whitley-based Butterfly Server View

On May 13, 2021, Delta Computers, a Russian developer and manufacturer of IT equipment, introduced a family of high-performance servers in the form factor 1OU OCP based on 3rd generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors.

Built in accordance with open standards and the Open Compute Project (OCP) architecture, this equipment is designed to become the basis for energy-efficient, productive, and cost-effective data centers. Using the combined capabilities of the Intel C621 A chipset, the Intel Ultra_Path Interconnect (UPI) system bus, and two 3rd generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors, these servers can carry a large range of workloads, allowing you to build compute clusters and create distributed hyperconvergent platforms.

The advantages of open OCP architecture include its energy efficiency, high density of computing resources in the data center, as well as their ease of maintenance. The combination of OCP architecture and Intel server platform performance not only reduces cost of ownership, but also provides customers with better, lower-cost services with a strong competitive advantage.

Delta Computers Butterfly server in OCP form factor supports up to two 3rd generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors (Ice Lake) with TDP up to 300 watts with an eight-channel RAM controller, which provides the ability to install up to 32 RDIMM/LRDIMM RAM modules including 3200 MHC to ANDDR4. The total amount of RAM can reach 8 TB.

Depending on the configuration, the server is only 1 Open Unit (OU) high-speed, hot-swappable SSDs:

  • up to 8x U.2 with total flash memory up to 64 TB;
  • up to 20x E1.S with total flash memory up to 80 TB;
  • up to 8x E1.S together with 8x SATA with total flash memory up to 96 TB;
  • up to 12x E1.S together with 8x E1.L with total flash memory up to 168 TB;
  • up to 8x E1.L in conjunction with 8x SATA with a total flash memory of up to 184 TB.

Two x16 PCIe Gen4 FHHL slots and one x16 PCIe Gen4 OCP 3.0 slot are available for add-in card installation.

The servers are compatible with Open Rack standard racks equipped with a single 12V DC current bus. Server management is carried out using Delta BMC v.1.3.0.4 software developed by Delta Solutions, a Russian company, an enterprise-level solution for monitoring and managing a large fleet of servers.

As of May 2021, Butterfly servers from Delta Computers are available for pre-order. The planned production volume is up to 2,000 units per quarter.
