In 2020, car production in Russia decreased by 35%, and sales - by 45% compared to 2012. But the volume of imported auto components decreased less - by 20%. The purchase of some types of parts has even grown. The import of spare parts for internal combustion engines in 2020 exceeded the level of 2012-2013 years. Thanks to the localization of foreign industries in Russia, it was possible to reduce the share of imports of cars, but not components.

In March 2021, it was reported that the desire to save on the purchase of spare parts for cars is not the only reason why people prefer to buy counterfeit goods. About 59% of motorists admit that they do not know how to distinguish the original part from the fake. Many admit that there are counterfeit spare parts that are better in quality than the original ones.
