2021: British government gives BMW $36.07 million to create batteries for "long-range" electric vehicles
In mid-August 2021, it was reported that a project from BMW to develop a battery for long-distance electric vehicles received $36.07 million in co-financing from industry and the UK government.
The project, called BMW-UK-BEV, is one of four that received funding as part of the selection for joint research and development of the Center for Promising Engines.
According to a statement by American Power Conversion (APC), the BMW project aims to create a battery for electric vehicles that will compete with internal combustion engines. The project will aim to develop the largest battery pack of the BMW Group to provide excellent performance and the cost of which will be competitive.
The UK plans to stop selling new diesel and gasoline cars and vans by 2030, the introduction of technologies capable of increasing the range of electric vehicles will be crucial for the country.
Among other things, this will help overcome the idea that electric cars have a small range, although the figure has already exceeded 400 km or the idea that electric cars are not able to make long trips without being discharged and stuck somewhere.
These projects solve problems related to the range and cost, which can become an obstacle to the transition of people to electric vehicles, and also offer potential solutions to the problem of decarbonization of public transport and freight transportation, "said APC Executive Director Jan Constance. |
In total, $125 million was allocated and in addition to BMW there were other successful projects that received funding. Brunel, which studies hydrogen-fueled internal combustion engines. Celeritas, which is associated with the development of batteries for ultra-fast charging. Reecorner, which is associated with a change in the design of a commercial electric car.[1]
