Announcement of an unmanned ambulance
In October 2021, Volkswagen introduced an unmanned ambulance based on the ID Buzz model. The novelty is equipped with everything necessary for transporting medical workers and assisting patients. More details here.
Volkswagen introduced its first unmanned vehicle
In early September 2021, Volkswagen introduced the first unmanned vehicle in its lineup. It was called ID.Buzz.
To make ID.Buzz autonomous, Volkswagen turned to the American technology company Argo AI. The company began by equipping the machine with a set of cameras, radar sensors and lidar sensors that can detect objects at a distance of more than 400 meters.
The equipment is backed by a complex one, ON which, according to a Volkswagen representative, can predict the actions of pedestrians, cyclists or other transport means. The company also claims that the system will naturally respond to any dangers by controlling the steering, throttle and brakes smoothly, like an experienced driver.
The complexity of the autonomous driving system means that Volkswagen will first release an autonomous ID.Buzz only in Hamburg to be able to control as many variables as possible during the development of EV. However, as the software improves, the technology will extend to other cities in Germany.
An environmental recognition system of six lidars, 11 radars and 14 cameras distributed throughout the car can record much more than a human driver from his seat, "said Kristein Zenger, head of Volkswagen's autonomous driving department. |
Like other Volkswagen electric vehicles under the ID brand, ID.Buzz is based on the MEB platform. Customers will be able to choose options with a panel or three-row passenger van, both of which will be available with batteries from 48 kWh to 111 kWh. A more powerful battery will provide a maximum range of about 548 km.
The van's electric motors will be borrowed from the ID.3 hatchback and the ID.4 SUV, and the option with one 201 hp engine and rear-wheel drive will be at the bottom of the model range. However, a model with an all-wheel drive and two 295 hp engines is also expected.[1]
