At Russian plants, Heineken began to use smart glasses to service equipment

Customers: Heineken (Heineken United Breweries)

Project date: 2021/09

At Heineken plants in St. Petersburg and Nizhny Novgorod, they began to use smart glasses with augmented reality (AR) technology to service production equipment. This is stated in the company's message received by the editorial office of TAdviser.

Within the framework of this project, called "Remote Expert," it is planned to solve two main tasks:

  • ensure the availability of narrow specialists for operational work with equipment and technological processes in plants;
  • Reduce time and costs to troubleshoot technical problems with experts from other locations.

According to the beer manufacturer, thanks to smart glasses, it is possible to speed up the repair of complex equipment by 25%. A wearable gadget allows specialists to free their hands while working - they do not need to hold a camera, smartphone or laptop to demonstrate breakdown to colleagues. Thus, experts wherever they are can allegedly see the equipment with their own eyes and thereby "control" the actions of a specialist who is physically next to the equipment.

Smart glasses provide communication between technicians, allows you to display drawings and text messages on the glasses screen, draw hints, record the work process on video and save it to the server. Heineken specialists plan to expand the use of the digital tool based on the experience of international colleagues. For example, in Mexico, such glasses diagnose equipment failures in laboratories, and in the Netherlands, technical assessment and audit of glass suppliers.

The Remote Expert project is being implemented in 14 Heineken divisions around the world by the end of September 2021. More than 150 specialists at 25 breweries use smart glasses at the same time. The manufacturer of AR devices, which began to be used in the brewing company, is not called.
