Federal Tariff Service (VMware Site Recovery Manager)

Virtualization of system services allowed to lower purchase costs of the new equipment, management of IT infrastructure and also reduced the recovery time of all services till one o'clock in case of accident.

The Federal Tariff Service is the federal executive authority authorized to perform legal price regulation on goods and services in accordance with the legislation of the Russian Federation. In the Management of information development and technologies of Federal Tariff Service of Russia providing development and operation of the Uniform information and analytical system of "regulation FST-REK-Subjekty" (EIAS Federal Tariff Service) 15 specialists work. Service of the server park, computers and a local network is performed by forces of the company outsourcer.

Problems in operation of the equipment of a data warehousing system were absent, but there were no guarantees that in case of failure of any hardware components, they will not appear.

The Federal Tariff Service was faced by a task to considerably improve fault tolerance of the solution using creation of additional opportunities of recovery of IT infrastructure. In case of the most serious failures in operation of the equipment, including force majeur circumstances, business processes should be continuous.

It was required to Federal Tariff Service of Russia:

• update the version of the product VMware Infrastructure 3.5 to VMware vSphere 4.0 (including drivers of all working virtual machines);
• configure mirror replication between two websites, each of which has the protected virtual machines and is the platform for recovery of virtual machines from the next website;
• customize backup systems and notifications;
• automate process of maintenance of all IT infrastructure in case of accident.

The Softline company was attracted to creation of the failover cluster placed on different platforms. A choice for benefit of professional IT service provider was made on a competitive basis according to the Federal law of 7/21/2005 No. 94-FZ "About order placement on delivery of goods …".

For project implementation of Federal Tariff Service purchased twelve licenses VMware vSphere Enterprise Plus, two licenses vCenter Server, the licenses Site Recovery Manager and Veeam Backup&Replication for all ESX servers. The Federal Tariff Service made a choice for benefit of solutions of VMware and Veeam as it already had experience with VMware, and the functionality of the products Veeam completely solved a problem of backup and recovery of virtual machines.

In the project progress reliability of a system which had an additional opportunity of data recovery in case of failure any of the websites considerably increased. The technology of virtualization allowed to solve complex problems with the minimum costs both on project cost in general, and on labor input of its accomplishment. For end users implementation took place almost imperceptibly, with the minimum breaks in work. A part of services improved performance due to installation of new high-performance disk data warehouses that is an integral part practically of any project on virtualization.
