By providing telecommunications and cloud services, VimpelCom is developing the foundation of its IT landscape - infrastructure. The observability of the landscape, the availability of services, predicting the occurrence of difficulties in customers, the speed of diagnosis and localization of emergency situations, the impact on the client experience of each consumer to provide quick assistance are the tasks that the monitoring system created at VimpelCom was designed to solve. At the first stage, the construction of a unified IT infrastructure monitoring system was initiated, supporting business services, including those with which the customers of the telecom operator deal . Implementation of the solution was entrusted to Jet Infosystems.

At the time of the start of the project, VimpelCom was already using several monitoring systems. They evaluated the state of individual services and fragments of the IT infrastructure, without creating a common picture. The VimpelCom IT team developed the architecture of the future target solution and, together with Jet Infosystems specialists, combined all fragments of the IT infrastructure into a single system based on Zabbix software, including storage systems, network equipment, backup systems, servers with various operating systems, etc. Based on their experience and practices, IT engineers set up ways to collect information for atypical equipment, and also developed a "health model" - rules (triggers) when the system reaches the risks of failures.

To see the status of business services, experts integrated the monitoring system with the existing configuration management database (CMDB). This allows you to track the impact of IT components on more than 180 applications and business services. For example, the work of a personal account, actions with balance, providing subscribers with various information - connected services, completed operations, etc. So the business got a clear picture of how a shortage of capacities and resources affects specific business functions.

"IT infrastructure monitoring systems are usually not used outside the IT department. But not in our case. The implemented solution gives product teams and businesses an understanding of how the operation of the infrastructure layer and services affects the customer experience of our consumers. Now the IT team relies on real data to justify costs, matching them with the priorities of the company and specific product teams, rather than expert forecasts, "- notes Sergey Ageev, Director of Service Development at VimpelCom.

Visualization of IT monitoring based on Grafana software has a three-level structure. The integrated dashboard provides an overview of nine main areas. The second level displays the total statistics for each direction. The third level gives information about specific devices, their intermediate observed states with visualization of the current and previous load and its dynamics of changes. So VimpelCom specialists in one console monitor the state of the entire IT infrastructure by key parameters and indicators from the business service to the fan sensor. The metric out of the regulatory range is recorded in a warning or emergency event.
