2021: Integration with One Click LCA Life Cycle Assessment

On December 2, 2021, Trimble announced the start of a collaboration with One Click LCA, which allows users of the Tekla Building Information Modeling (BIM) software developed by Trimble to calculate the carbon footprint at various stages of design and implementation, which in turn contributes to a complete reduction in the impact of carbon emissions in construction in the future.

The combination construction data of Trimble's Tekla software database with One Click LCA's extensive environmental product declarations (EPDs) allows you to calculate the total values of embodied carbon from a preliminary analysis to the implementation of the construction project, taking into account each nut, bolt or reinforcement rod throughout their life cycle in the project. Tekla users will have access to the Carbon Footprint Assessment Tool from One Click LCA in an integrated configuration with the Tekla software platform. Access will be free until the end of 2021.

Structural elements account for up to 70 percent of the embodied carbon footprint of the building, so reducing carbon emissions in the design of any structures is crucial under the Zero Goal program, as indicated in the goals of the UN Climate Change Conference COP26.

One Click LCA's automated life-cycle assessment software helps users calculate and reduce the environmental impact of buildings, projects, and product, design, and infrastructure series. Combining the functionality of Trimble's One Click LCA and Tekla BIM software solutions, companies contribute to the design and construction of low carbon footprint facilities, which requires following a zero-emission program. The calculation of embodied carbon - the amount of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere during the creation and operation of all materials used in the construction of the building - is a relatively new concept. It rapidly occupies a key place in the work of many industry specialists: engineers, designers, builders or manufacturers of materials and structures. There is a growing need for carbon management in the construction sector. Governments and other governments in countries such as the Netherlands, France, Great Britain, Sweden and Italy have begun to demand a declaration on embodied carbon. Carbon emissions are expected to be limited in the future.

The collaboration of the companies is based on the existing integration of One Click LCA with Tekla Structural Designer, Tekla Structures and with the Trimble Connect collaboration platform for continuous data exchange. Trimble Connect is available by subscription in several versions, including free, with all versions supporting integration with One Click LCA tools.

The integration of Tekla Structures was carried out by one of the construction consulting companies Sweco, in collaboration with One Click LCA. Sweco used a combined solution in a large-scale project to create a sports facility with zero carbon footprint.

Sweco aims to be an example of sustainable development. We try to participate in a word and deed in solving the problems facing society to ensure stability and reduce carbon emissions. Integrating One Click LCA with software solutions for BIM technologies is a way to assess in practice the potential carbon footprint throughout the life cycle of a building. We are working on a low carbon project using Tekla Structures software as well as One Click LCA to assess carbon exposure throughout the life cycle of the project. The integration of One Click LCA with Trimble helped us to easily estimate the carbon footprint of each project option at an early stage. Integration also simplifies the process of calculating the quantity of materials when making changes to the project, while achieving a high level of accuracy, so we can easily get an up-to-date calculation of the quantity and complete information about the life cycle.
said Ossi Kujala, construction engineer for Sweco Structural Engineering.

This collaboration enables design engineers, manufacturers, contractors and other stakeholders to effectively system decarbonize their projects. This assessment of the carbon footprint and impact of the project during its life cycle is necessary to reduce carbon emissions, determine the optimal strategy in terms of cost and carbon embodied, as well as to certify the activities of companies and align them with regulatory requirements. One Click LCA can be used to calculate environmental impacts and align projects with BREEAM, LEED, DGNB and more than 50 other certification schemes, standards and requirements. Data can also be easily combined with information from other design software solutions. We are very excited to partner with Trimble and apply our tools to scale up decarbonization,
noted Panu Pasanen, CEO of One Click LCA.
