2021: Appointment as Chancellor of Germany

On December 8, 2021, Olaf Scholz was officially elected the new chancellor of Germany. In this post, he replaced Angela Merkel, who has been chancellor for the past 16 years.

President Frank-Walter Steinmeier presented Scholz with an official letter of appointment as chancellor, and he took the oath of office with members of his cabinet.

In the elections held in Germany on September 26, 2021, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party, which was led by Angela Merkel for many years, showed the worst result in history, gaining 24.1% of the vote. In the first place were the Social Democrats from the SPD, led by Scholz with a result of 25.7%. The third place was taken by the Greens with a result of 14.8%, followed by the Free Democrats with 11.5%, the Alternative for Germany (AfD) with 10.3% and the Left with 4.9%.

According to German laws, the chancellor is elected by secret ballot without debate. He must receive an absolute majority of votes in the first round. In the Bundestag by December 2021, only 736 parliamentarians, Scholz had to get at least 369 votes. He crossed this threshold.

During the election campaign, Scholz was often criticized for the lack of charisma. According to a survey conducted by the Sociological Institute of YouGov, almost two-thirds of Germans do not think that Scholz will stay as chancellor for more than four years.

Scholz briefly outlined his position on Ukraine: in the near future she will not become a member of the EU and NATO, he is not ready to discuss the issue of military support. As for relations with the United States, Scholz has repeatedly spoken about the partnership of the two countries.[1]
