2015: Hackers stole thousands of Angela Merkel emails
In early May 2020, Der Spiegel magazine reported that hackers (presumably from Russia) hacked Angela Merkel's email back in 2015. According to the publication, the Russian special services seized thousands of emails from the constituency of Chancellor Angela Merkel during a hacker attack on the German parliament . Der Spiegel refuses to disclose the source of this information.
The lower house of the German parliament in the Bundestag discovered that its systems were hacked in May 2015. Initially, experts could not determine exactly what information was stolen during the cyber attack. The total amount of data accessed by the attacker reaches at least 16 GB. Der Spiegel writes that the federal criminal police and the federal cyber agency were able to partially reconstruct the attack and found that the target was the mailbox of Merkel's office.
According to a published article, on May 8, 2015, an unknown person under the nickname Scaramouche downloaded many data, including, presumably, thousands of emails from the Chancellor's office, which came to her two email addresses. They contained electronic correspondence from 2012 to 2015.
Der Spiegel notes that although secret correspondence is carried out by Merkel from the Office of the Federal Chancellor, the stolen information could compromise Merkel's personal and official environment, as well as her political decisions.
The German federal prosecutor's office issued an arrest warrant for a person related to the 2015 hacker incident, Sueddeutsche Zeitung reported in May 2020. The Russian side has repeatedly rejected accusations of involvement in hacker attacks. None of the law enforcement agencies of Germany has ever provided any evidence in support of the media version of the ties between cybercriminals and Moscow.[1]
