Leprosy Research Institute

According to him, in the region there are natural centers of leprosy and cholera. By mid-December 2021, 84 lepers live in the Astrakhan region, of which only four receive special treatment. After the liquidation of the institute, patients in need of hospital treatment will be transferred to the Sergiev Posad Leprosory or Leprosory in Stavropol.

It is claimed that the scientific base and teachers will move to Astrakhan Medical University. The university said that the research will continue and will even be carried out at a higher level. True, due to which this level will increase, the medical university did not specify, especially since the medical university does not plan to deal with patients with leproy. And although the university passes the entire territory of the institute, located almost in the center of the city, with buildings, laboratories and leprosory, patients will be evicted.

According to Olga Bashkina, rector of the medical university, it is planned to place a high-tech scientific and educational center, laboratories, a multidisciplinary clinical center and an educational and administrative building in the lepra research institute.

According to NIIL, from 2017 to 2019, ten new cases of leproy were registered in the Astrakhan region, in 2020  - six.

Lepra or leprosy  is a chronic disease caused by mycobacteria and occurs with damage to the skin, peripheral nervous system, etc .  Not all people are exposed to infection, but only a small percentage. Manifestations of the disease in a infected person may never occur.[1]
