2021: Creating a "mini-brain"
Cortical Labs researchers have created a "mini-brain," which consists of nearly a million living cells, in a petri dish. In the system, human brain cells were placed over microelectrodes that stimulated them and analyzed for neural activity. This became known on December 19, 2021.
Cages played an arcade tennis video game like ping pong. Electrical signals were sent in turn either to the right or to the left of the array - in this way, scientists showed where the ball is. As a response, the mini-brain launched neurons to control the racket.
During the game, neural activity was determined by the movement of the racket.
Cells grown in a petri dish learned this in just five minutes, while artificial intelligence (AI) took an hour and a half. However, in the case when cells and AI became rivals, the latter always won.
Cells showed the ability to self-organize - they acted purposefully as a response to scarce information about the consequences of their decisions[1].
