2022: Samsung showcases MRAM-based computing

In early January 2022, Samsung demonstrated the world's first calculations in RAM based on MRAM, random access magnetoresistive memory. According to Samsung, this achievement demonstrates the company's leadership in memory technologies, as well as its efforts to combine memory and computing chips for next-generation AI chips.

Samsung Electronics introduced the MRAM chip for in-memory computing, replacing the standard "current sum" computing architecture with a new architecture that works with the "sum of resistances," which solves the problem of small resistances of individual MRAM devices.

Calculations in MRAM memory were tested with AI operations. The chip achieved 98% accuracy in handwritten digit recognition and 93% in face detection in scenes.

The researchers note that the use of MRAM, the production of which has already reached commercial proportions, for computing in memory expands the ability to develop next-generation artificial intelligence chips with low power consumption.

The researchers suggest that the MRAM chip they developed can be used not only for in-memory computing, but also as a platform for loading biological neural networks. In-memory computing has similarities to brain activity, they said, as in the brain computations occur in a network of synapses - points where neurons touch each other. Thus, the new development, in theory, can be used as a platform for simulating the brain by modeling synapses, notes one of the authors of the study, Dr. Synchul Jung.

Building on its leading memory technology to combine it with system semiconductor technology, Samsung plans to continue to strengthen its leadership in next-generation computing and AI semiconductors.[1]
