2022: Migrating Digital Assets to VK Cloud Solutions

The Moscow Metro moved its digital resources to the VK Cloud Solutions region. Thanks to the migration, the stability of the infrastructure has increased: the Moscow Metro application, which is used monthly by more than 1.5 million residents of the capital, minimizes failures and malfunctions. This was announced by VK on February 15, 2022.

The main task of the project was to reduce the load on the local infrastructure of the Moscow Metro. The state unitary enterprise (GUP) has many digital resources, the most heavily loaded of which is the Moscow Metro mobile application. About 220 thousand people use it per day, and about 1.5 million residents of the capital per month, and their number is constantly growing. In the application, Muscovites have such functions as building routes in the subway, paying for travel, current news and train schedules. All this requires processing large arrays of constantly updating data.

As of February 2022, VK Cloud Solutions virtual machines host the Moscow Metro application and Moscow Metro sites: landings for collecting user applications and internal resources with documentation. By migrating to the cloud, VK Cloud Solutions has minimized the number of disruptions that have affected enterprise digital assets.

Data on the train schedule, metro map, customer requests are contained in the S3 object store, which scales easily with the growth of their volumes. In addition, the developers of the Moscow Metro are deploying in the cloud, microservices which are responsible for the new functions of the application: for example, in the near future, online parking payment will be available to residents of Moscow. In the future, PMT plans to switch to Kubernetes as a Service from VK Cloud Solutions, including for auto-scaling applications. This will increase the stability of the Moscow Metro infrastructure and provide an opportunity to accelerate the process of launching microservices.
