2022: Shortwave Release
On February 18, 2022, it became known that ex-employees Google created the Shortwave project - a modern version of the mail service. Google Inbox Google decided to cover it and focus on. Gmail Now Inbox is going through a second birth.
According to the company, the project was invented by a group of former Google employees from the push message division Firebase.
Inbox appeared in October 2014 and developed in parallel with Gmail. Google did not hesitate to integrate various functions into it, which it profitably differed from the more conservative Gmail. However, in 2018, Google decided to curtail the project and focus on Gmail. User access to Inbox was closed in March 2019. The service did not live to its fifth anniversary at all.
Google promised to transfer all Inbox features to Gmail, but, as Ars Technica writes, it never did. Google's attempt to forget about all the developments used in Inbox and prompted its former employees to revive the service under a different name.
The authors completely copied the Google Inbox interface, and also borrowed its main concept. So, all letters here are automatically sorted by the so-called tags (bundles), depending on their topics. In addition to basic shortcuts, you can create your own shortcuts. Letters can also be sorted by date of receipt.
The Sweep button, a quick mailbox cleanup tool, returned to Shortwave. In Inbox, he allowed you to set up rules for deleting letters and literally throw unwanted correspondence out of the box with one click, for example, mailing from popular marketplaces in Russia.
Shortwave borrowed other Inbox features that distinguished this service from Gmail. It was always focused on the maximum speed of working with email and allowed for a couple of clicks to do what Gmail would take much longer.
Shortwave cannot be considered a full-fledged postal service. The authors of the project do not give the opportunity to register another mailbox, at least as of February 2022.
Shortwave is an aggregator of letters that can collect them from other services, for example, from the same Gmail. This means that the user will have to give the project access to his mail account, but Ars Technica experts claim that the authors of Shortwave are trustworthy.
At the time of publication, Shortwave existed as a web application, as well as as an application for iPad and iPhone, available for download from the Apple App Store. The utility for Android is also on the way - it is at the stage of beta testing, but the developers have not yet called the release dates. In the App Store, Shortwave has a rating of 4.7 out of 5. The application was uploaded to the catalog at the end of January 2022.
The Shortwave project is conditionally free. You can not pay the developers not a ruble, but then letters will appear in the mailbox only in the last 90 days. It is possible that the free version of the service in the future will receive additional restrictions, but the authors have not yet talked about this. In any case, you can withdraw them for $9 per month (682 rubles at the Central Bank exchange rate on February 18, 2022) for one user[1].
