2022: 47.8% production growth

The volume of production of medical needles in Russia in 2022 in monetary terms increased by 47.8% compared to the previous year, in physical terms - by 15.6%. This was reported to the Ministry of Industry and Trade in mid-April 2023. At the same time, the department did not give absolute values.

By the end of 2022, a total of 52 certificates for the production of medical needles were registered in the State Register of Medical Products, 35 Russian companies are engaged in production, the Ministry of Industry and Trade said. At the same time, according to the general director of the consulting firm Regmedikal Yevgeny Alekhin, more than half of the needles used in Russia are still imported from Southeast Asia: India, China and Pakistan.

In October 2022, it became known that the Medical Technologies company will invest more than 300 million rubles in the production of disposable injection needles for medical syringes and other medical devices. The facility will be launched on the territory of advanced development (TOP) "Kumertau" in the Republic of Bashkortostan. Production capacity will be up to 220 million needles per year. Earlier, another company close to Medical Technologies, Prokvadrat Medical LLC, received the status of a TOP resident with a project for the production of medical syringes with an investment of 310 million rubles.

According to the Federation of Laboratory Medicine, by the beginning of 2022, domestic companies provided approximately 30% of the country's need for medical devices for in vitro diagnostics. Manufacturers have a dependence on imported raw materials.[1]

2021: Injectable needle sales in Russia increased by 16% over 5 years

Sales of injection needles in Russia over 5 years increased by 16%: if in 2017 they were measured by 597.1 million units, then in 2021 - 692.3 million. This is evidenced by data from BusinesStat analysts, released in March 2022. At the same time, the proceeds from the sales of these medical devices are not indicated.

At the same time, in 2021, there was a decrease in sales of injection needles in Russia by 3.6% compared to the level of 2020. The demand for consumables for taking laboratory samples and inpatient drug treatment has been established at a new equilibrium level, the researchers note.

Needles can be used internally to produce more complex medical products or sold domestically as a separate commodity. The main buyers of injection needles are domestic manufacturers of disposable sterile syringes. In recent years, new Russian manufacturers of syringes and needles have opened. In the existing syringe production facilities, their own lines for the manufacture of injection needles were put into operation, according to a study published in March 2022.

According to analysts, against the background of the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic in Russia, the need for injectable needles from both state medical institutions and private clinics and laboratories in syringes and needles for them has increased.

It is noted that purchases of medical equipment and tools by state medical institutions in Russia are made according to the law, according to which such products are prohibited from being admitted to public procurement for hospitals and clinics in the presence of domestic analogues. The list of imported products, the use of which is limited for state and municipal medical institutions, includes medical syringes, which leads to an increase in their production within the Russian Federation, added to BusinesStat.[2]
