2022: Caspian Space Monitoring Center established in Astrakhan

In April 2022 , the Ministry of Education and Science of Russia announced the creation in Russia of the Caspian Space Monitoring Center, which will train specialists in the field of geographic information systems and geospatial research in the Caspian macro-region. It will open in Astrakhan in August 2022, according to the website of the department.

It also states that the center will visualize geographic information materials and create cartographic materials for making effective administrative and management decisions in strategic areas of the region's economy.

Astrakhan is working on the creation of the Caspian Space Monitoring Center

Viktor Zanozin, senior lecturer at the Department of Ecology, Nature Management, Land Management and Life Safety of Astrakhan State University (AGU), noted that the center can have the widest range of areas of work: from analyzing the agricultural cluster of regions based on remote sensing of the Earth and monitoring emergencies to developing new ways to analyze large spatial data and deep machine learning algorithms .

The obtained data will allow performing high-precision analysis, monitoring and forecasting of various environmental and socio-economic processes based on space images, digital maps and geographical information systems data using neural networks.

By April 2022, the AGU interacts with the Scientific Center for Operational Monitoring of the Earth (operator of Russian space means for remote sensing of the Earth). University employees receive data from Russian Resource-P, Canopus-V vehicles, carry out preliminary and thematic processing of data from Russian spacecraft. The general fund of processed data is more than 1 TB of information only on the Volga River Delta.

In addition, Astrakhan State University collaborates with Center for Innovative Technologies LLC, the domestic developer of the Image Media Center spatial data processing software complex, and with the NextGIS team, leaders in the field of working with geodata in the domestic market.[1]
