Monkeypox

Monkeypox is a rare, usually mild infectious disease that is usually transmitted from infected wildlife in some areas of Africa.

The disease is transmitted through direct physical contact and by airborne droplets, the incubation period is from 5 to 21 days, symptoms are fever, back and muscle pain, chills and fatigue.

Mortality in monkeypox ranges from 1% to 11%.

Monkeypox vaccination has begun in Israel. 80% have side effects

On July 31, 2022, vaccination against monkeypox began in Israel. At the first stage, 5600 doses of the drug were received in the country. It turned out that almost 80% of those vaccinated had side effects, which became known at the end of August 2022.

First of all, men 18 years and older, born after 1980 and at risk, should receive the vaccine. We are talking about men who have been diagnosed with HIV or have been diagnosed with one of the other sexually transmitted diseases since the beginning of 2022: gonorrhea, syphilis or chlamydia.

Monkeypox vaccination begins in Israel

The Ministry of Health says that other groups of the population may receive the vaccine. In particular, breastfeeding mothers and children who came into contact with smallpox-infected monkeys. To get vaccinated, you need to assign a queue in advance by phone or through the application of the health insurance fund.

The Maccabi Hospital Fund conducted a survey regarding side effects within seven days of receiving the monkeypox vaccine. The result of the survey showed that 21% of respondents did not have any side effects.

74% of respondents reported that they experienced pain at the injection site, 22% talked about stiffness, 20% - about edema at the injection site, 7% - about local redness and edema and 6% - about itching.

Relative to general symptoms, 62% of those vaccinated had none at all. 27% of respondents reported weakness and increased fatigue, 11% reported muscle pain, 9% reported headaches, 6% reported diarrhea, 5% reported nausea, 4% reported decreased appetite as well as lipoma edema, 3% reported chills and joint pain. 1% of respondents reported skin rash and redness of the eyes.

Regarding the duration of symptoms, in 3% they passed within 24 hours.

39% of respondents reported that symptoms resolved within 2-3 days, in 19% - within 6 days, in 22% they still persist.[1]

The European Union buys 110 thousand vaccines against monkey pox from Bavarian Nordic

In mid-June 2022, Bavarian Nordic announced that it would supply Europe with about 110 thousand doses of its MVA-BN vaccine against monkey pox by the end of summer. The financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed. Read more here.

Third death and more than 7,000 cases in Spain. 96% are gay

Spain is still the European country with the highest number of monkeypox infected, followed by France (3833), Germany (3551), Britain (3407), the Netherlands (1209) and Portugal (898).

The Ministry of Health in September 2022 reported a third death from monkeypox - with concomitant infection of the disease from other causes - in a data update report that indicated there were 7,037 confirmed infections, of which 219 required hospitalization.

According to updated data from the National Epidemiological Surveillance Network (RENAVE), two of those infected with monkey pox died in late July from meningoencephalitis, to which a third "with concomitant infection with monkey pox for other reasons" must be added. The latest report found that 6,890 reported infections were reported in men and 147 in women aged 7 months to 88 years, although the median age is 31 to 44 years.

Of the 5,372 infections reported, 487 (9.1%) had complications throughout the clinical process and mouth ulcers and secondary bacterial infections are among the most frequent.

The report also indicated that 5,407 of the 5,620 cases for which information is available were among men who had sex with men (96.2%), while there was no information on 1,417 infections.

In 92.9% of the 4,570 cases for which information is available, the transmission mechanism was through close contact in the context of sexual intercourse and in 7.1% through close non-sexual contact. One case is related to occupational health exposures, and for the remaining 2,467 cases, information is pending, unspecified or unavailable.

Number of monkeypox cases in Spain nears 6,750 - the highest in Europe

According to a report released by the Spanish Ministry of Health on September 7, 2022, two-thirds of cases were reported in the Madrid region and Catalonia, with 2,366 and 2018 cases of infection respectively.

In other parts of Spain, 814 cases have been identified in Andalusia, 470 in the Valencian Community, 260 in the Canary Islands, 220 - in the Basque Country, 193 - in the Balearic Islands, 113 in Galicia, 71 in Aragon, 71 in Castile and Leone, 56 each in Asturias and Castile-La Mancha, 54 in the Murcia region, 31 in Cantabria, 31 in Extremadura, 19 in Navarre and 6 in La Rioja.

In the rest of Europe (as of September 6), a total of 15,880 confirmed cases have been reported, with Spain at the top of the table, followed by France (3,646), Germany (3,501), Britain (3,279), the Netherlands (1,166) and Portugal (871).

52 thousand cases of infection in the world and 18 deaths

Data published by the World Health Organization (WHO) shows that from January 1 to September 5, 2022, 52,997 cases of monkey pox and 18 deaths were reported in the world, two of them in Spain.

Test systems for the rapid detection of monkey smallpox virus and antibodies to it were developed in Moscow

A company from the special economic zone "Technopolice Moscow" has developed test systems for detecting the monkey smallpox virus and antibodies to it. Diagnosis will allow you to quickly recognize the infection early in the disease. The states of New York, California and Illinois in the United States declared the outbreak of monkey pox an emergency in the hope of stopping the increase in the number of infections and ensuring vaccination of people. The number of cases in the United States is approaching 6,000.

Spain confirms first death from monkey smallpox

On July 27, 2022, the Director General of the World Health Organization (WHO) Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that more than 18,000 cases of monkey pox have already been registered in the world, 70 percent of them in Europe, and called on men who have sex with men to reduce the number of sexual partners, given that they are the group of the population most exposed to the virus.

At a news conference, Tedros said that so far only five people have died from the virus, and in 10 percent of cases, hospitalization was required to relieve the pain caused by the infection.

Ninety-eight percent of cases are men who have sex with men, and the WHO Director-General asked them to reduce the number of sexual partners and reconsider the possibility of new sexual contacts.

  • One of the biological laboratories in the Kharkiv region of Ukraine was put into operation, despite the requirements of curators from the United States to increase the level of biosecurity.
